I EDC a 49 no dash. It shoots fantastic with Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 gr +P. For a reload I carry an 8 round speed strip in a belt pouch. I got both from Dillon.
"Humpbacks" are a Hammer in a taco action! The hammer slot allows dirt and lint to enter the action over time. I remove grips and side plate, and flush the exposed action with spray break cleaner (points cleaner works great too!) You'll want to do this outside over gravel or a trash can, wear protective gloves! While the innards are still wet with cleaning fluid, I lubricate with one drop of BreakFree CLP. This thins the CLP and it wicks all over before the cleaners evaporate. You end up with a super thin coating of Teflon lube without a buildup to attract grime. Almost every day I check the hammer area for lint fluff and often find it. I just blow it out and move on. A serious action scrubbing is a 6-to-12-month maintenance precaution. My particular 49 had an action job and a silver Metal-life finish before I owned it. It isn't not a beauty queen but an Every Day working gun! I pocket carry currently in a DeSantis Nemesis.
I have reached for it in self-defense twice. It never cleared my pocket before the assailant took off! So I have never fired it in anger. However one very difficult shot I made with it was during my 30-year war with raccoons invading my house. I commonly shot them with the 49 with them sitting on the gutter about 25' off the ground using DA, but one day when I got home from work an adolescent was in a large fork of a limb 35' straight up. I had a window of handball size as he was watching me, I used the single action feature. Square in the face, and one less maker of holes through the soffit into one of the attics! (Moved in 8/24/1984, moved out 9/11/2014) in those 30 years, I killed well over 150 raccoons, most with a CCW revolver! When they hit the ground, they went into a blackberry patch as fertilizer! We ended up with several very healthy blackberry patches! (I lived on a small farm surrounded by corn fields!)

My wife keeps a 649 in her car. I bought it, like new, at a pawn shop in Dallas for $150 in the 90s.

Nice Bodyguard. I picked one up at a show several weeks ago as well. Kind of coincidental, because you rarely see them. Mine shipped in April of 1969 according to Dr. Jinks.
Do your grips number to the gun? Mine came with ugly Pachmyers on it, but I had these Grashorn’s at home just waiting for it. I posed it with a Randall that I picked up at the same show.

Grips are numbered to the gun. BTW, That Randall goes really well with your 49.
The extra weight with a 49, makes them a lot nicer to shoot when your loads
start to climb with higher fps, mostly with the new SD ammo, of tody.
They can tame the old 158 FBI load, to where they are controlable, for most shooters
while letting you shoot 148 target loads all day long.

Great find! Those are solid machinery! Mine is 40 this year, with the first 21 spent in my pocket or ankle holster as a backup on-duty or primary carry off-duty.

I carried a M49 for several years as a duty backup weapon until the M649's came out. My M649 was on my second weapons card until I retired. Foolishly sold the M649 after retiring since I carry an auto 99.9% of the time now. I would still like to have one of the metal Bodyguards to drop in my Carhart Coat pocket when I'm out shoveling or blowing snow. I've got a Ruger LCR that's OK but it just doesn't feel the same as the 49/649. Now I'm looking to find another m649 or m649-2 but would settle for a nice m49 if I could find one. I really like the ugly little blasters.
