model 49

A long time friend died in March of this year. We knew he kept a pistol somewhere in his house, today we found it! Model 49, serial# 284J53 on butt. There are other numbers but according to the instructions they are without meaning, there is however one that might mean something, G10 on cylinder yoke along with a six digit number that I am assuming is an assembly number. Can anyone help me date this pistol? I have the STANDARD CATALOG of SMITH & WESSON 3rd edition but I am unable to decipher the year. User error I am sure.
