Hi guys,

I ran across a deal on a 52-2 that I thought was pretty good, so I went ahead and purchased it thinking that I could likely sell it fairly quickly at a modest profit to fund the purchase of S&W Shield 9, or something similar for my wife and young boys to learn to shoot semi-auto pistols with. That being said, I remember looking at and reading about these Model 52's when I was a kid back in the 70's and I always wanted one, and from time to time over the last few years I have ran a search on Gunbroker to see what their availability was like.. as you can likely guess, when they do show up on Gunbroker they seem to be expensive, and frankly beyond my financial means. So there is my conundrum.. stick with the original plan and sell it to fund a different pistol, or keep it knowing full well that I will likely never have the opportunity to own another one..

If anyone is able, I am also interested in knowing the approximate date of manufacture and a realistic (non-Gunbroker) street value. The pictures will tell the tale, but what I was told was this was purchased new in the box and never fired by the owner, however he did take it out of the safe from time to time to play with it, and is evident in the pictures, put it away without wiping it down. As a result there is now corrosion (rust) freckling, spotting, pin-rust (I don’t really know how to describe it accurately) evident on the front strap, back strap and both magazines. This rust is really only noticeable under close examination in good light and if I decide to keep the pistol I will likely just clean it up with some brass wool and oil, but for now want to leave it as is. I did wipe the pistol down with a cotton cloth with Hoppies to prevent any further deterioration.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

52-2

52's are great shooting pieces - - emphysis on shooting. If you do not plan on shooting the gun you have a vary expensive paper weight.

The 52 is not a gun you would expect to be packing around in a holster but rather in a target shooters box. You are limited to flush case mouth seated 148 grain wadcutters only. On the range, they can't be beat.

I guess you need to look at what you want the gun for then decide. What ever you decide the decision will be right.

If you keep it, will you use it?

If you will target shoot it, keep it, you can get a shield next year, and your family can certainly shoot the 52-2 with you.

If you are not going to shoot it, sell it, and get something you will use.

We only go around one time. You work hard for your money. Enjoy, don't have it just sit in a safe.

Oh yeah, if I keep it, I will shoot it. We don’t have any safe queens! Currently the boys are shooting a Ruger Bearcat .22lr, S&W 32 Regulation Police and a S&W Model 10-6 38 Special although it is rather large for their small hands, so I am confident as they grow, that they would eventually be able to get a decent purchase on the Model 52 grip frame. I already cast and load for the Model 10, so all I would really need to make this go bang is a bullet mold for full wad cutters. My current "target" pistol is a Sig 1911 stainless target, but it also does double duty as a carry gun. If I keep the Model 52, it would never see the inside of a holster.

Nothing S&W has ever built before or since shoots like a Model 52

I have had this one for decades. If you do your part, these will shoot one raged hole at almost any distance.

Understand the the Model 52 is also unforgiving of shooter error. You need good trigger follow through. Plus the recoil pulse is like nothing you have ever experienced in an autoloader. It is amazingly soft and most 52s will almost drop the brass at your feet, no running across the range to pick up your casings.

If you stay with it, the Model 52 will force you to be a better shooter.

I think you already have made up your mind. As you said, 52s only come along once in a while these days while you can almost pick up a shield at the corner store.

As to resale price that is difficult without seeing how bad the corrosion is. If this were in perfect shape it would be in the $1,100+ category considering how complete it is. However based on description, I would probably not spend more than $650+ on it. For my own ownership I would probably have it refinished

If you look at GB, you will see most of those high priced ones never have bids on them

Model 52s shoot best with HBWCs not DEWCs, There are molds for that projectile. Also you will not want to cast #2 alloy, you want to cast these soft. While I do cast myself, I buy soft swagged HBWCs for my model 52s. The only HBWC I cast is for the 41 Magnum since you can't buy those.

While you and your boys shooting skills may not yet be at the point where this will make a visible difference. If you bench the 52, you will see the tighter groups with the HBWC. Also as you shoot the 52 more, it will become apparent

S&W Model 52 Mfg. Dates

Serial Range A475000 thru A565000 was made in the 1978-1979 time frame.

Thanks colt saa, I don’t ever recall seeing a mold for a hollow base wad cutter, only the soup cans. I will have to look around if I keep it. I do have plenty of soft alloy on hand though, as the only thing I use it for is the 32 S&W Long. Will also check availability of commercial HBWC's.

BigBoy99, thanks for the date look up!

There is a group buy going on right now for HBWC molds in 38, 41, 44, or 45. The HB pins can be replaced with solid pins to cast DEWCs in the same 2 or 4 cavity mold.

MiHec HBWC Rerun... .38, .41, .44 & .45 Cal.

I think the 38s are being run shortly so if you want in on one you probably do not have much time. The others are not ready to be re-run yet.

thanks, I saw that on there and it looks like the 38's are closed, but he said they may produce extras for sale. At this point I am kind of leaning towards selling this baby off. Anyone care to propose a realistic asking price?

With the condition being less than pristine having box,2 mags , papers & tools won't help value much . It would however be a nice shooter . You might be able to get $750 for the package from a motivated buyer . At the risk of being hung , you could part it out . If it were in better shape I'd never suggest it . List it on Gunbroker with a start of what you'd take for it . We both might be suprised at what it might sell for .

Jinks/S&W for your ship date - apparently slow period and sort of FILO

Thanks for digging that up! kind of all over the place weren't they.

Hi elpac3,
I have to say, mine gets regular woods walks in a 1911 hip holster and is a great trail gun. It has been used to take crows, squirrels and snakes along with untold numbers of cans and other plinking targets.
It's a super plinker.
Thanks
Mike

I've decided the heck with it.. I'm gonna keep it and shoot it. I figure Smith and Wesson is unlikely to ever make any more of them, and they sure aren’t getting any cheaper. Now if I can only get my hands on some HBWC's and some dang gun powder then I would be in business. Seem to be out of stock and on backorder everywhere I have looked. In the interim I might buy a Lee six gang mold and just cast up some full wad cutters and see how they shoot. If they don’t work out I can still shoot them in the Model 10-6

The Remington 148gr hollow based wadcutters are around if you look real hard.
Powder is still tough at this time, I use Bullseye.

Well I finally found the time to work up some loads and go shoot this pistol. Couldn’t source any HBWC’s to save my life, so I order a Lee six cavity 358-148-WC mold and cast up a pile of bullets out of some really soft alloy. Tumble lubed them and sized to .358 and then loaded over 2.7 gr of Bullseye in Star-line cases with WSP primers. Crimped with Lee factory crimp die.

I have not bothered to chronograph them, but did do some initial accuracy testing at short range and was quite pleased. Had brought along a family friend that had never shot a handgun before.. I had a Ruger Bearcat .22lr, Ruger SR22 .22lr, Ruger MKII Suppressed .22lr, S&W .32 Regulation Police, S&W Model 10-6 38 Special, S&W Shield 9mm, Sig 1911 45 ACP and the S&W Model 52 for her to shoot. As you can see in the picture, she is a rather petite young thing, so I didn’t figure the large framed pistols would be a good fit, and that the recoil of the 45 ACP might be a bit much. I was wrong on all accounts, and her favorite out of the bunch was the S&W 52 (it’s now my favorite as well), with the Sig 1911 running a close second! Couldn’t believe it… she chewed the x-ring right out of her target with the S&W 52 albeit at only 10 yards. Still, that isn’t bad for a first time shooter! The pistol she liked least? S&W Shield 9mm… the long heavy trigger pull gave her a lot of grief, and she was hard pressed to stay on paper at 10 yards. She didn’t care for the Ruger SR22 either, and frankly I am not all that crazy about it myself. I purchased it for exactly this kind of training scenario, however it also has a rather long, heavy trigger pull in double action (the single action pull is better, but still sucks) and does not seem to be as accurate as you would suspect..

Anyway, thanks for the prior advice in regards to this Model 52. It’s a keeper!
