Hello friends. I found another orphan. After watching it sit at the
local shop for a while, I went last night and made the deal.
Once I got it home and got it cleaned up ,I found the worst of the damage on the cylinder and barrel.
It looks like a movie prop gun.
" Throw the gun on the ground ,and kick it over here".
Anyway ,,as I got to looking at it, I measured the height of the rear sight assembly.
Then the height of the front sight.
They were the same.
After removing the rear sight I could see that the ramp on the front
sight base made an almost perfect sight picture to the notch cut
into the top strap for the rear sight.
The width of the ramp is .080 ,the notch in the topstrap is .090.
Figuring that all I had to lose was a barrel ,I got out the dramel and
hacked off the front sight blade. Then whited in the top 6 grooves of the ramp.
Wow ,,talk about your express sights. The sight picture is impressive.
Especially for these old eyes.
The point of aim will be adjusted this morning at the range by removing
material from the top and sides of the ramp with a file.
Then the barrel will be cut and crowned to 3 1/2 inches.
With the ramp base set back from the muzzle like a reg. mag.
Yep ,you got it. A fixed sight 3 1/2 inch 357 magnum Highway Patrolman.
The model 528 we all wished Smith and Wesson had built all along.
The pictures tell the whole story. Cutting off the 1/2 in. will remove
the nasty pitting on the end of the barrel.
I already have the line scribed to follow.
I am not touching the frame. It will not get round butted.
If I ever want to put it back to original all I have to do is install a
barrel, and put the rear sight back on.
It came with the wide smooth trigger, and target hammer already
on it. I've already done the action work.
I bought the P.C. Magnas at a show last month for $50.
I will polish and re-finish the cylinder.
What do you think?? Your opinions are welcome ,whatever they may be.
Regards ,, Allen Frame
Here are the pictures of the finished cut and crown.Added 3/26/2110.
All the work was done with a bench vise, hacksaw ,bench
grinder ,painters foam sanding block ,
and Birchwood Casey perma-blue.
The whole thing took about an hour.
And the sight picture ,'enhanced 'bu white out.
