Update:
The strain screw I received from Cylinder and Slide was the same length as the existing screw in the 547. So I filed it (the new one) shorter and then took the gun to the range to see if the shorter screw caused light strikes. It did (in double action) so I screwed in the shorter screw a bit and it solved the light strikes. Overall… I was only able to reduce the SA trigger pull from 5.5lb (per my wheeler gauge) to 5.0lb.
I took several revolvers and shot at 50’ indoor (the only length available at my club’s indoor range). I usually shoot outdoors but it was near zero here outside. 50’ is too far for my old eyes.
Several other revolvers joined the SW 547 in the fun-
- SW 15-2 4” combat masterpiece .38spl
- SW Model 3” 317 kit gun .22lr
- Colt Frontier Scout .22lr
- Uberti 5.5” SA .45
- Cimarron 7.5” SA .357
- Charter Arms Professional 3” .32 H&R Magnum
- Taurus Model 990 4” 9-shot .22lr
The 547 performed very, very well and the extraction of the 124gr S&B FMJ spent casings worked flawlessly every time. I was pleasantly surprised how well the revolver handled and felt as I shot the 9mm rounds… it was not unpleasant to shoot.
However, I immediately did two things when I returned from the range-
- smoothed out the VERY sharp stippling (right term?) and corners just a touch on the hammer. My old skin was almost torn through from the sharpness on the hammer. I shot most in double action… just to avoid cocking the gun with the razor edge hammer. No… I didn’t use a dremel… just some very fine automotive sandpaper. You wouldn’t notice to look at it… but it made a huge difference.
- I ordered Hogue rubber finger grove grips… the older I get the more I need those to maintain a proper grip to enjoy shooting revolvers. The magna grips are hard for me.. as are the grips on the 15-2. So I ordered two Hogues.
I’m pleased with the performance of my 547 and will be taking it to the range frequently when I have more “revolver days” at the range.
The target below is from shooting 50rds with the 547 at 50’… most in double action.
I am not good at 50’… hence why I gave up bullseye shooting.
