Did S&W ever make any Model 57s with a 5" barrel like my 27-2? I really like the way it shoots, and wondered if I could be so lucky as to find the same in a 57.

S&W made at least one and possibly two (the company should have made more, but didn't). Check out my Expert Commentary on " A Rare 5-inch Model 57, A "Tool Rom" Job, for pictures and discussion of these rare guns.

Commentary

Great Commentary! Very informative, telling exactly what I asked, but not what I wanted to hear. No chance ever, as it is made of that wonder metal-Unobtanium!

I always liked the 5" barrel on a revolver. I think I currently have 9 S&Ws with this barrel length and I wish S&W had offered it on more models as a standard catalog item. I also like the 7.5" length. I think it is more attractive than the 8 3/8" size (and easier to type).

Shortening 57 to 5"

If you wanted to shorten a 6" or 8 3/8", who would you recommend to do the job? S&W or a private smith?

S&W no longer offers barrel shortening services, they stopped that in the late 1970's, I believe.

Here's a model 657 stainless 41 magnum with a 5" barrel. It certainly looks like a factory barrel because of the crown, front sight and centered roll stamps on each side. The photos below show it over a 4" 657.
