I recently acquired a Model 57. While shooting with it last week, I noted that one of the fired cases could only be ejected with some difficulty. The same difficulty exhibited on the next two reloads. Taking measurements of the fired cases indicates that charge hole was bored out of round and oversize. Smith and Wesson will repair the revolver, but only with a newly manufacted cylinder, and this is a pinned and recessed model. Any insights?

i seen the same thing in one of the old security six by ruger. about smith & wesson it seems you only choice. the over size is what is killing you. it was'nt over size a good good gunsmith 9( s&w) could ream it out to right id. good luck man hope you probles work out for you,

Find a Model 27/28 recessed cyl. and have a good pistol smith re-chamber to 41.

This option is out for this reason-

the 27/28 cylinder is noticably shorter, and the BC gap would be huge.
I would place a WTB ad here and see if you can buy a nice used cylinder to have swapped over by a good gunsmith (to make sure the timing is correct and the cylinder locks up correctly).

It looks as though the options are locating a used part or having a new style cylinder fit. Be sure that the problem is defective machining and NOT a bulged cylinder from an overcharge because that would make the gun dangerous to shoot.

Thanks to all for the input. I guess I'll search for a used part for a while, and lacking success, let Smith and Wesson put a current cylinder on.

I received your PM, but don't seem to be able to respond in the normal manner. Thanks for the consideration.

Just dug out my old 8 3/8th mod 57 no dash. It had always been very difficult to eject spent rounds. Recently picked up 2 657s, no problem ejecting spent brass. Cleaned the cylinder chambers very good hoping it was just dirty. Fired it yesterday. The spent brass easily came out about a 1/4 in then stop. Noticed the ejector star would not drop back to its home position with the brass in this partial ejected position. Had to knock out each round individually. Took the micrometer to them. You could see the bright ring where they were bigger. The mic showed .438 at this spot. nearer the case mouth, it was back down to .435. Between the rim and the "bulge" it measures .432/3. Seems all cylinders are the same. It's good to know I can return to S&W for a replacement cyclinder. It's a shooter so not worried about the newer style cylinder. Had thought about letting my smith try to hone/polish out the rear of the chambers just a little.
