Model 57 Grip question

Hi,
I recently acquired an early Mod 57, S prefix, blue with 4" barrel. It came with Herretts Grips and in my search to find the correct grips I purchased a set from an eBay seller.

These grips have the black rubber washer, the football indention but, when installed on the revolver, the rear lower portion of the grip frame is proud of the wood and the two halves of the grip, below the grip frame that should fit flush together... seem to be rounded where they come together... not unlike a butt crack for the lack of a better word.

I will attempt to post pics. If anyone can tell me what I have, please do so as seller is having problems with me returning them and to me they look awful and are not correct.

Poor fit and appear to be altered. That butt crack as you call it looks as though the grips were sanded that way for some reason .

Yes, apology for the butt crack description but that's the only thing in my mind that fit the description.
As with the S Series having diamonds, I do believe that it correct.
When I can figure what the correct grip is/was, I will begin my search.
Any help appreciated as I really do need to know what I am looking for!!

You should return those if you can and put the money towards finding an unmolested set of N-frame diamond target stocks. Those you have at present have been modified and it's anyone's guess as to why and what they were fitted to.

Well, it does look like a butt crack. I would tell the seller that you did not order the butt crack variation.

The correct stocks for your S-prefix Model 57 depend on how old it is. If you list the first three digits of the serial number, I can most likely tell you what style of stocks are correct. Coke bottle stocks, diamond target stocks, or non-diamond target stocks are the three options.

If the seller will not take them back file a SNAD (Significantly Not As Described) with Paypal and they will force him to take them back.

I'll know more when Bill deciphers my Serial Number. Looks like I may need to find as near to original as possible without going all out for the Coke style grips. Maybe there are a couple more styles that would fit my needs that aren't quite as expensive.

The serial number range appears to be 1968 to 1969, so I'm guessing it had diamond targets, or non-diamond targets.

This gun has diamond target grips. The non-diamond target would look similar except it doesn't have a diamond around the grip screw.

The grips need to fit your N frame.

Your Model 57 most likely was shipped in mid-1969 after the supply of diamond target stocks was depleted. The photo below shows the stocks that are correct for your Model 57.

Yup, your gun is actually a rather LATE S series and not an early one. I have S298xxx that came with non-diamond stocks and the change occurred right around that time so yours most certainly had "football" target stocks like these.

Those grips you bought for your gun are hideous. I am not surprised that the seller does not want them back. Unless his photos clearly depicted the defect at the bottom of the backstrap, he is an unscrupulous seller who should be outed.

Give us a link to the auction or identify the seller so we know who is trying to pull this kind of garbage.

Absolutely agree! Sorry, but I can't stop laughing at the "butt crack" remark as that is exactly what they look like. A plumber might pay top dollar for 'em though
