Model 57 question

I’ve been wanting a 4” Model 57 or 58 for sometime, but they are getting harder to find. I have thought about purchasing a new model 57 and since they only offer it in a 6”, having the barrel cut down. Anyone have any suggestions on this, and would it be worth it?

I would recommend patience. I have often regretted making purchases, then finding exactly what I had hoped for later. If you want a six inch model 57 to hold you over that's fine, of course you could always alter it later but the expense could be a game changer. I like to have all the barrel lengths, especially with the 57, you won't find a better caliber/frame combination.

My suggestion is to place an ad in the " Want To Buy" section of this forum. I bought 2 of them once at the same time, both NIB 6" and 4". I sold the 6" a year ago, and kept the 4" in the presentation box. I am sure you will pay dearly for a collector grade, but a good 4" shooter should not be too hard to find

I agree...I recently bought a NIB 6" nickel Model 57-1...This means I settled for non-pinned & recessed...Then almost immediately two 4" 57 no dashes fell into my hands, one nickel and one blued...This weekend I acquired an 8 3/8" blued P&R 57 in a presentation case with all the tools (yes the SAT too)...Keep your eyes open and be patient......Ben

Yes, they're out there, be patient and keep looking. I bought a 98+% 57 no dash 4 inch in the presentation box and a ANIB unfired 6 inch -1 one day in early September from the same LGS. Now 58s, I've been looking for a long time. . . . . Good luck.

Thanks everyone, I tend to get in a hurry, so I really appreciate everyone’s input on being patient. One revolver I had wanted since I was maybe ten or twelve years old was a model 19, nickel 4”. Never found one until a few years ago, and just happened to walk in a shop about a hour from where I live, and there one was.

I would second all the great advice you have received above. My Model 58 hunt started here, and at times my impatience threatened to get the best of me. My advice would be to hold your bucks and wait for the right revolver to come along. The 57 and 58 aren't common, but there are a good number out there when you start turning stones.

After weeks of deliberation and being outright picky in my selection - found an ANIB 58 at a little fifty table regional show. Sometimes what you are looking will show itself in the least expected of places. Of course after I bought the 58, a 57 turned up in the local shop the next week.

Three 4” Blue last week

I saw 3 model 57 4” in Blue last week on major gun seller websites. I bought one. You just need to decide how much you are willing to pay. There are plenty out there.

I got lucky on both my .41M's; found my S prefix M57 while perusing the displays at a gun show a couple of miles from my house a couple of years ago, and found my S prefix M58 right here on the forum, back in January. It was ANIB and unfired, to boot.

Just be patient, they are worth the wait.
