Model 57

Having been a fan of the .41 Mag forever and only owning a Ruger Blackhawk 7.5" in .41 Mag.My first and only handgun for 25 years.Not a good platform to learn to shoot a handgun from.I found the recoil more than I liked and had difficulty controlling the gun.So I never shot it much and mostly shot rifles anyway.
Then 3 years ago a pristine Model 10 came my way and I learned to shoot a handgun very well with that Model 10.Then I bought a Colt Lawman in .357 sweet revolver.Then 7 more Colts mostly in .357 and one Anaconda in .45 Colt.
I bought a heavily carried shot little Model 19 I shot that better than any revolver I had ever put in my hands.I had avoided the bigger magnum revolvers because of the Ruger Blackhawk was hard for me to control and thought they were all hard to control.
A friend of mine bought a NIB Model 29 and let me shoot it,I shot it as well as any other handgun.Just with more controllable recoil than my smaller and lighter .357's.
I was ready to shoot bigger cartridges and started looking for my Model 57.Decided on one of the new ones with the lock.The used ones approached NIB or higher,I do prefer pinned barrels and recessed cylinders, to bad S&W could'nt see their way to keeping it closer to the original 57's.
My only complaint with the new model is a sharp edge around the forcing cone.I will dress it up and it will be fine.
Trigger in S/A is as nice as any S&W but D/A is long and heavy.It is a target gun so it will stay,the price was right @ $791.00
The only 2 NIB revolvers I have ever bought were both .41 Mag

Good looking gun. I too am a .41 Magnum fan.

Carried Mdl 58 as a duty weapon for years.

Finally found a couple of nice Model 57's in the last year.

My accumulation is growing.

Shooting a Smith and a Ruger or Colt single action are quite different. I let most single actions roll a bit in my hand and ride the muzzle rise. With a Smith I lock my wrist and elbow and either rock back with magnum recoil or allow the whole arm to rise. I never found Colt DA guns to fit my hand that well. I have medium size hands and a Smith with target grips just fits me right. Magnas are a bit small for my hands so I usually replace them with targets. YMMV

You can't beat a model 57.I have two now.One is the new current classic model.I like it alot but had to change out those new thin grips to some older ones.Now its good to go.

I agree the stocks on the new guns have little to be desired.I am looking for a pair of rosewood Magna grips.

i too am a 41 mag.fan..recently acquired a 3"to add to the group...great caliber...its not difficult to reload the caliber from mild to wild

I actually went shooting the other day with my model 57.I was shooting 41 special.They now make 41 special brass so you don't have to trim down your 41 mag brass.Feels like shooting 38 specials out of a 357,lots of fun without the recoil of the full power load.

I still wonder what the purpose of the .41 Special is when chambered in an N frame revolver. One can download the Magnum casing and get the same result.

Now, an L frame .41 Special, that's something else...

Congrats on the new M-57. I love the N frames the most.

Bought a new 57 last month. Blue on the gun is exceptional, however the grips aren't my favorite. I may refinish them or simply replace when I decide what I really want to do with the gun (woods use, sidearm, or just fun shooter).

Having trouble finding shooter ammo locally now....but I knew that well before. I have some nasty Double Tap Barnes loads in it with 2 speedloader backups for use as my "downstairs defense gun".

I've got to get back into reloading so I can work up some loads and stock up.

.41 Rem Mag and Model 57's are really nice and pleasant performers.
