Model 58 finish

Picked up a very reasonable priced "S" serial # 58 at a recent gun show. It needs a total refinish! Is Smith the place to have it done or are others as good and reasonable. Smith says $275 for high polish blue.
What steps do they take? How do they address stampings. Are refinish of hammer & trigger included? Do they do minor tune up when done?

I still would like answers to the questions about how the procedure works & what steps the refinisher takes, what is refinished(complete gun including hammer, trigger. etc. Do they make minor adjustments(timing/lockup etc) when the gun is reassembled?

I’m sure S&W would make sure it’s operating correctly and any parts that need replacing are replaced. I’m pretty confident that S&W won’t refinish the hammer or trigger. Fords also, according to their website, does case hardening for the hammer and trigger.

First, congratulations on obtaining the Model 58.

I obtained a Model 58 about three years ago that needed refinished. I sent it back to S & W. They checked it over, replaced worn parts and refinished the revolver. The work was second-to-none and I was very pleased. They even returned the worn parts to me.

I cannot speak about having a firearm refinished elsewhere, but S & W was superlative and their personnel were courteous and patient with my questions.

I now have a revolver that I will never part with.

Call Mel Doyle in Idaho. (208)686-1006, He did a Browning High Power for me and it's outstanding now. One week turn around also. I've had some problems with Fords in the past(lost parts).

This is an example of S&W factory refinishing. It was done about seven years ago. This gun was a law enforcement gun that had significant blue wear but no blemishes, rust or flaws in the metal that would require polishing. I assume they just stripped the old blue and reblued it.

The current S&W bluing is different from the older, original, bluing. It is very dark, almost black. They did an excellent job for me.



This Model 27, no dash, is an example of an original blue from S&W for comparison purposes.
