i have a matte finish model 58 sn 29144 with a C stamped below. i bought this back in the early ninties from a OK State Trooper. love the gun but it may need to find a new home.

May be my limited experience, but I've never seen a matte finish on a 58 before. I have one nickel and a blue one and all the blued ones I've seen where the typical S&W polish of the day. That almost looks like some type of black parkerizing to me. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will chime in.
The gun looks to be in good shape, though, and I predict would sell quickly here, though I wouldn't speculate on a price until I knew more about the finish.

I too think it's been parkerized . Add that to non original grips & without seeing it & checking mechanics hmm ----- $5 - 600 for a shooter . These have been going up lately with ANIB blue running $9 - 1100 & nickel up to $1150 - 1300 . Just my 2 cents .
DH - that is not the serial number. Take the grips off and look on the butt of the grip frame. You will see a "S" or "N" followed by 5 or 6 numbers.
I believe you have a aftermarket finish, and although the grips aren't original - they are very nice.

Welcome to the Forum DH from out in the Rockies. I agree with the other members that you have a nice shooter grade Model 58 that appears to have been refinished to suite a previous owner's tastes. I would also add - though, a little hard to confirm from the photos - that a previous owner may have also had a non-original target hammer and trigger installed. So again, while these would be a negative to collectors, I would still LOVE to have a Model 58 like yours for a shooter/trail gun - so congratulations on making me jealous on your first post!
Have a look at the bottom of the grip frame after taking the stocks off, you should see the letter S or N followed by a number; this is the SN and we can let you know when it was shipped.
I looked at the finish a little closer. Even not in original finish, with any grips, assuming the gun is perfect as far as function goes, 500.00 + all day long. There are many people who could care less about how original the gun is, they just want a solid 4 inch 41 mag to pack in the woods or in the urban jungle(LOL).

My friend recently bought a first year production model 57 four inch that someone turned into a k/l frame round but, did a great duty tune, had NP3 put on it and Millet rear sights.
He paid a total of 525.00 for it. The gun lasted 5 min at out LGS.

My LGS had the brand new S&W M58 4" and M57 6 1/2'' in nickel for $699. I grabbed both. I see the older ones priced all over the place.

In addition to the finish and the H/T being replaced the original stocks are gone. They were slightly different from other N frame Magnas and only the very limited edition Model 520 also used them
All in all I still think you could get $500 for it. I would not pay that much, but somebody would.

It probably shipped in 1968 per the SN. The metal-bottomed stocks were popular for a time, perhaps to serve as a cushion for the grip frame when applied quickly to people's heads

It shoots great, used it to hunt hogs in texas. Knocks em dead.

Sounds like someone put in a Combat wide trigger and Target hammer.
As to the metal on the bottom of the grips, a lot of LEOs used to have them as was said above for a headknocker but usually just to keep the butt of the grip from getting chipped from constant carry.
Have to agree with the general assessment of value...it will sell in a day at $500 and within a week for $600...
