Paid and did the paperwork today on this beauty - an early 6" Model 586 that is an exact duplicate of the very first one I ever purchased in 1982. I remember it well. Shooting Times and Guns & Ammo were going bonkers about the new L Frame and I had a very good source for new S&W's at the time. I waited and waited. Finally got the call and I kept it for nearly twenty years before selling it to a relative.

I checked the crane to see if it had the S&W recall stamp 'M' and it did not so it'll be shipped to S&W to have that work done soon after I pick it up next week.

Otherwise, I'm pretty excited to stumble across one of my all-time favorite wheel guns, especially an early one in minty condition. :D

That is certainly a great looking 586. I have never seen a Patridge front sight like that one. Mine has a Patridge that is integrated with the barrel. I have seen some pinned 686s, but they have one pin in the sight. I am wondering if the front red ramp sight was milled off and the Patridge pinned on.

Whether that is the story or not, I am really liking your new 586!

I'm pretty sure that my original 586 was set-up exactly the same way but since I don't own it anymore and my cousin no longer owns it, I can't verify. It definitely had the Patridge front blade, though.

When they first came out, you couldn't get a 586 with a 4" barrel. Only 6" and 8 3/8" were available for the first year or so of production. The first several 586's I saw at my LGS in 1982 were set-up similarly with the 'target' sights from S&W.

This one didn't come with an original box, unfortunately, but one of the collectors in this forum should be able to either confirm or deny that S&W shipped the early ones from the factory like this? I should've taken a good close-up photo of the top strap because there are no signs of milling work that I could detect. The gun doesn't have a scratch or ding on it, just some minor handling wear on the grips. It sure hasn't been shot much, that's for sure.

Back in `82 I special ordered one just like yours.
Patridge front sight, target trigger and target hammer. Loved it.
Congrats on a sweet L frame.

You sure that you want to send it in for the "M" ?
To me, that translates to unnecessarily "monkey'd with".

If it were anything more than replacing the hammer nose, I would agree 100%. There's no tremendous hurry since I prefer to shoot .38 for practice at the range. Plus, I shot 3k rounds thru my original 586, most of them .357 Magnum, and never had a problem with binding.

It >is< more than replacing the nose. They replace the recoil shield firing pin bushing too.

I have it's fraternal twin. Not identical, since it has the red ramp. Phenomenal gun! Mine has not been M'd and it hasn't given me a bit of grief since I bought it in the 80's. YMMV, but I'd be reluctant to sent it in unless you have issues with it.

Very nice. I really enjoy the 6" 586 I have even though I am not that crazy about the engraving. Sweet shooting gun you got there!

The gun isn't engraved. The early models had the S&W logo stamped on the right side of the frame. The rest of the markings are the usual S&W markings for a revolver of that era.
