At the range this weekend, I met up with a former collegue I had not seen in some time.

While he was unpacking his handguns and we were catching up, he said he "needed to thank me". "For what?" I inquired. "For passing on this model 59", "I got it last year when you turned down the offer".

I vaguely recalled a telephone call from a shop I frequent asking if I'd be interested in a "like new" model 59 with original box and docs and two mags. At the time, with my finances still smoldering from my divorce, I declined the offer. Evidently the shop had my friend as the next potential customer, and he purchased it.

This model 59 is literally like new. The grips are perfect and the blue slide and glossy black anodized frame are free of handling marks or holster wear.

My friend proclaimed this 59 to shoot better than his custom 1911's. He proceeded to run our target out to 20 yards and put a 1.5" group in the 10 ring using WWB.

Bringing the target in to 10 yards, he put 5-shots into one of the little black dots used to patch Shoot-N-see targets.

He let me have a try too. I moved the target out to 10 yards. The sights reminded me of the vestigial sights on my old military 1911's. The 59's trigger was as smooth as any of my Performance Center revolvers. Accuracy was phenomenal. I shot little cloverleafs as small as any I've shot with my model 19's and 66's. Recoil was negligible. Not much more than what I encounter shooting 9mm+P in my 3913.

I'm glad my friend benefitted from my failure to procure this model 59. He got a superb 9mm range/carry pistol for an extremely low price. I learn from my mistakes and have put a LNIB model 59 at the very top of my semi-auto wants list.

Any other 59 fans? Why is the model 59 seldom mentioned on the gunboards? Do they all shoot this well? Regards 18DAI.

59

I had a loaner 59(3yrs) and shot thousand of rds, never a problem.....well maybe one, keep saftey on with one in the tube, they seem to go off when dropped and hit muzzle down. wish I would bought it(90.00)when the upgrade to 659 took place.

My Favorite

The M59 is absolutely my favorite autoloader. I would choose it before any others. It fits my hand perfectly, has great balance, and is fun to shoot.

I've commented on this before and as hard as it is to believe, I shoot tighter groups with my 59 than I do with my 952-2.

While I knew nothing about them, a well holster worn example was the former duty gun of a shooting pal I met after moving out here (Seattle).
He had been medical'd out of the Washington state patrol after a shoulder of the highway wreck had done enough cervical damage to warrant it. He was turning 60 and was doing P/T security work where I'd gotten a temp gig at. He loved that 59 and with good reason. He shot Hell out of it, and shot it well! It was the only S&W auto I'd ever played with at all (2002'-2003') She had a butter smooth action and shot far better than my novice experience with her should have allowed.
In fact he with that 59, was the only person I ever came in second to using my 66 in company competitions. He was a very good shooter, using a fine weapon!

I have always thought it was a mistake for S&W to do away with the barrel bushing found on the 1st gen semiautos.

After 30,000 rounds through my Model 59, I traded it (getting more than I had paid) towards a Model 659.

Neither the Model 659 or my Model 5906 ever matched the accuracy that my old Model 59 delivered.

Luv my 59 also. I picked it up Dec. 08. It shot good from the get go.

I agree with you on the bushing. My 459 and 59 have a much tighter fit than any of my 3rd gens. Having said that I have had several FTF, FTE malfunctions with my 59. I got it used and it has all the original springs and such. If any one has any suggestions on what I might do about this I would appreciate it.

My 59 started to FTE frequently out of the blue, I hadn't changed any ammo/cleaning routines. I sent it to S-W just to make sure it was correctly fixed, they replaced the extractor (didn't comment why) and it never did that again. Here is the bad part...I friken sold it...

First Gens

I love first generation Smith 9mm's.

After 20 years of ownership I only recently became aware that Second Gens have a different lower.
