Model 60 Front Sight

Good Evening all

I am thinking of adding a model 60 to my small collection of Smiths. I have a model 38 no dash that has the very thin front sight post, and I have a hard time shooting with that sight because of my eyes.

Did the no-dash 60’s start off with this sight as well? And what year or dash number would I was to get to have the thicker front sight blade?

Love my 60-4.

I actually had my gunsmith widen the rear sight channel so I could see the sight picture better.

I also added the laser grips. Incredible help in low light.

Get one and set it up this way if you can find one.

Edit: the grips fit my hand amazingly well........I have a medium hand and this may not work for everybody, but they are well designed for comfort and shooting excellence.



I carry Glocks a lot but this is my summer carry.

The model 60-7 went to the 1/8" wide front sight.

For perspective, here are a 3" Model 36 from 1968 with the 1/10th" front sight and a 3" Model 60-1 from 1971 with a 1/8" front sight (only 171 assembled and shipped in 1978). The 3" Model 36-1 from 1966 onward had the same front sight at this 60-1.

Beginning in 1988 the 3" Model 60-3 also has the wider front sight.

As Alan said, finally in about 1991 or 1992, S&W put the 1/8" front sight on the snub nosed Models 36-7 & 60-7.
