Model 60 Inbound

Just completed purchase of a "lightly used" Model 60 no dash, 2" in .38 special with box, papers (no tool kit) and original wood grips from a private party listing on an internet site. From the codes on the box, the gun dates to late-1986 production; ANRxxxx serial number.

I usually don't purchase my firearms without being able to handle, inspect and test for function but the seller was very indulgent and responsive to my questions and requests for information.

This Model 60 will pair well with my 1983 vintage Model 36 and, once I confirm function at the range, will work into my EDC rotation.

I also have a pair of 2-1/2" K's - Model 66-4 (1997) and Model 19-5 (1988).

I'm starting to see a trend - stainless and blue pairs - and, yes, I know....I need to start on some L-frames....

I am currently traveling overseas and am anxious to pick this revolver up from my FFL upon my return to the good ol' US of A!

Not sure....I have original wood grips for my SB Model 36. They fill my hand and work well for me in my Mika Pocket Holster.

The rubber grips may be too large for pocket concealment and, to this point, I don't have any experience with J-frame RB wood factory grips.

So, I guess I'll have to make this decision once I've had the chance to put this Model 60 in my hands and put some rounds down range.

I've got two. Both are dash 0. I bought one new around 1971 and gave it to my wife who was an officer who was killed in the line of duty 12/31/84. I still have it and it ain't going anywhere. A couple of years ago I found one a few numbers away from mine in a pawn shop for $300 OTD. For that price I wasn't gonna leave it there. I brought it home and set it on a counter. My daughter saw it and wanted to know why I had Mom's gun out. I told her what I had done and she said "well you don't need two of them" and stuck it in her purse. A model 60 is the most accurate J frame I've ever shot. I still want a nickel 36 and will trip over the right deal eventually.

First of all, my heartfelt thanks to you and your wife for your service and sacrifice. I cannot adequately convey how much this is appreciated.

My wife told me that I didn't "need" the Model 60 as I already have a 1983 vintage Model 36 in great condition. I explained that "need" had nothing to do with this purchase and, God bless her, I didn't receive any further argument.

My wife shoots but doesn't carry. Hopefully she won't eventually decide to walk off with my 60....

As for what grip, I carry my Model 60 in a IWB holster with Pachmyer Diamond Pro grips. I like these alot because I can get all of my fingers on the grip. However if I was going to pocket carry, I would not go with these grips as they are long and thick.

I find that the factory grips on my 60-15 work well both for IWB and at the range.

I am anxious to see and feel the rubbers on the incoming Model 60.

I was a working LEO at the time the Model 60 was released for sale. Demand for a copy was extremely high in my part of the world and apparently everywhere! It was a while before I was able to handle a friend's copy. I wanted one badly for myself! It was over a year before I actually saw one for sale. There was so much demand that these guns were bringing premium prices with no negotiation possible. I owned a Model 36 at the time so was not without a backup/off duty gun and being at the lower end of a low pay scale and having a growing family, I just didn't have the wherewithal to purchase the Model 60. I made do without one but coveted everyone that I saw. It was many years before I finally purchased a nice used one, almost as nice as the one you have pictured above. That looks like a very nice one! I think you will be very pleased! Congratulations!!!

Amazing how the no dash lasted for that long. 25 years without a revision. Guess S&W saw no need to improve on such a great gun. Mine is from 1975. I got it for $420 last year OTD. I added the Tyler T grip to improve the grip but this little gun sure jumps in my hand, even with my pretty mild reloads. Don't carry it, but that could change. I just wanted it for the history of it.

I owned a lot of Smiths back when I was in my early 20's.

I only have 9 now, but then and now the 60 has always been my favorite.

Mines a no dash, but doesn't have a pinned barrel.
