Just purchased a Model 60 .38 S&W Special, The latest edition of the S&W standard catalog I have is the 4th.

Was trying to look up some info on this handgun and the same thing is happening with the last J frame that I purchased.

I assume the number on the bottom of the grip frame is the serial number, it is ABT9412 .

It is marked MOD. 60 on the yoke with no dash.

I am having no luck finding anything on this serial number.

Anyone have any thoughts.

Thanks

If you call S&W Customer Service at 800-331-0852 they can give you the production date for the alpha-numeric serial numbers to the actual day!

That's a fine looking 60. I'm looking for one of similar condition. I found a 36 pristine in condition.. seems like they're easier to find.
Good luck with yours.

Early one, no dash, flash chromed action parts. Those were made of unobtanium, back in the day.
Finally got one, had it awhile, and then swapped it on a M640.
Yours will clean up nicely with a little 3M cloth.
Great little gun.

I have a Model 36 that has been performing J-frame duties for almost 50 years. I'd like to retire it and get a Model 60 in .357Mag. I wouldn't carry .357Mag in it, but having that ability is good.

Now, there's a puzzlement. A 60-1 should indicate the deleted pin in the barrel, yet the OP's gun is a 60 dash nothing.
There was a 60-1, which was a 3" heavy barrel with a square butt. 171 of these were made in 1972. The practice of pinning revolver barrels was abandoned in 1982. For whatever reason, I don't believe this resulted in a "dash" number (denoting an engineering change) being upped one or added on to any of the various models being manufactured at that time.

Goony nailed the first Model 60-1. Parts made in 1972, and Smith & Wesson assembled and shipped 169 on June 12, 1978.

The second Model 60-1 was a 2" Chiefs Special Target model in 1985.

Neither had anything to do with an engineering change.

The model was still a Model 60 until 1988 when Smith & Wesson made an NYPD exclusive Model 60-2 that was double action only with a bobbed hammer. Then that year or the next the Model 60-3 came out with either a 2" lightweight or 3" Heavy Barrel.

The last Model 60 in the database with a barrel pin shipped in February 1983. It was serial number AAS2345.

The Second Edition (yeah, I need a new one...) notes the -1 includes the 'pin delete', in '83.
