Today I bought this pristine Model 60 from a friend. Checking the book when I got home indicates a 1969 RXXXX serial number.....I now have one of the first stainless steel firearms ever! Very cool wheelgun. Box, papers, cleaning equipment are all there.

Thinking it's still only work around $750 or so at full retail, so I think I'll tuck this into the safe for a while and admire it from time to time as it matures.

I was just checking model 60's out today. That is a nice one. I have a set of stocks coming that begs for a J frame, which I own none of.

Beautiful little gem you got there! I have an early one too.

I started in LE in 1971 on the island of Marthas Vineyard. I purchased a Model 66 4" and a model 60, both because of being on the ocean. They were both early ones. I eventually sold them both off to get the latest and greatest something or other. Wish I had them both back now especially the model 66 because it was my first LE handgun and I went through the academy with it

Didnt the early run of mod-60s have SS hammers and triggers?

Yes, the first run (39 in the run) in 1965 and and the first regular production run (897 in the run) in 1965 and 1966.

According to Dr. Jinks the second regular production run corrected a metal deficiency, and the hammers and triggers were case hardened before changing to a flash chrome finish on those parts during that run in 1966 and 1967.

Ship dates for the J-prefix serial numbers began in 1969.

Thank you sir. I stand corrected. So, with the serial number as R46XX my resources indicate a 1969 date. The actual first SS guns came out in 1965 in very small numbers.
