Hi Guys,
I traded a worn-down 870 Express for this 1979-vintage Model 60 (no dash). I believe it was a Mag-Na-Port custom job, as the EDM barrel vents and the trigger and hammer work bear their fingerprints.
When I got it home from the 10-day Kalifornia Gun Jail, I set about to cleaning her from stem to stern and replacing the mainspring with a Wolff 14 lbs spring (the lightest I'll use) and a Wolff Reduced Power 14 lbs Rebound Spring. I noticed that the trigger had some rebound issues under DA cycling.
While inside, her Rebound Slide was polished as well as its corresponding area of the frame. The sideplate was lightly stoned to remove any high spots and the whole piece was treated to a hand massage of FLITZ and Mother's Aluminium Polish to remove the years of grime. The resultant finish is a very soft bead blast finish that is gentle to the touch and to holsters.
About 2 weeks ago, I contacted Chris McVety at Amerigun about the possibility of installing a front Tritium sight in the piece. He said that he and his Team could of course install one, but cautioned that I should shoot it first to determine correct windage.
I'll get out to the Range sometime in the next 1-2 weeks and will verify her groups at 30-35 feet. Chris told me that if she need correction, he can slightly offset the Woodruff cut into the barrel's topstrap and mount /pin the sight. At 30-35 feet, I presume that the correction right/left would be .002" -.003".
You'll notice that instead of me darkening the front sight with fingernail polish, I chose to highlight the rear sight channel opening with Em-Nu (Marines know this product as the black paint we put on our chipped Enlisted insignia or black EGA devices). The front sight comes right up in the channel. Not as good as a Trijicon front sight, but for now, it'll do nicely.
The DA pull is about 9.5 lbs, but is very smooth. I don't mind the trigger pull, so long as its smooth. I also took out the trigger and re-polished the pad, so the meaty area between the 1st and 2nd Distal Joint on the trigger finger glides over its polished surface.
I don't believe the gun was shot too much. I don't see much in the way of cartridge slap on the recoil shield or any end shake issues. The cylinder locks up tight and has a B/C gap between .004" - .005". Not bad. I also noticed that the forcing cone was chamfered slightly, but strangely enough, the cylinder charge holes weren't chamfered. Not sure why...
The two things needed for this quick-turn project is for the front Trijicon night sight (with a slight opening of the rear sight channel) and a charge hole chamfering by Kenny and his Team at Mag-Na-Port.
Thoughts?
