Spotted an early (I think) stainless shrouded model 60 at the local Cabelas. It has (maybe) ivory grips. Actually, on a stainless, they make it a bit ugly. I want to take some cash to the store and argue a good price this weekend. I have a couple of pairs of wood grips to replace them, in case I can grab this. I think I can get this sub-$500... Worth it?

Yes - with the caveat that it is not beat up - and tight mechanically. I bought mine here on the forum - and, although it shoots fine - it bugs me that the yoke is retained kinda loosey-goosey against the frame... Most of the J-frames I have handled in the last couple of years have had the same symptom - maybe bent extractor rods, maybe bent yokes or maybe just sloppy fitting.

You've probably already tried this, but for those who haven't:
have you tried tightening the yoke screw? I suspect that much firing with warm .38 or .357 ammo loosens that screw.

Keep all of your screws tight. Not so tight that it takes a sasquatch to loosen them, but good and snug.

If the grips are real ivory, you probably won't get the gun for under $500. But they probably aren't ivory.

Yes, a Model 60 in really nice condition, especially if it lacks The Lock, is a good buy for under that amount.

What do you mean "shrouded"??

Usually that term refers to the ejector rod shroud or the hammer shroud - the model 60 had neither.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I too am a bit confused about the shroud wording

Below is my M60, No dash

OP, feel free to PM me if you are interested. This one has not been fired in over 30 years

Later M-60's, like from -9 and on have shrouds/extractor rod housings. I think all .357 versions have.

Many of our members aren't too careful in mentioning dash suffixes.

A "good" deal at Cabela's?

As far as I've experienced around here....there are no "good" deals at Cabela's.....just very highly overpriced specimens, no matter what true "condition" you find it in.

Add to that the fact that now they will not even remove the trigger guard 2 piece lock assembly until after you have bought it and left the store, how can you assess much of anything?

They never allow and "out-the-door" offer (at least at 3 I have tried in the past....before Bass Pro bought them out).

So in my opinion (I know...worth nothing) what you may find is a Model 60 that they paid $150 (if that) truly worth maybe $400 that they will let you have for $599 + tax + BC.

Check it over very carefully.............it may be a gem....it may be a nice looking specimen needing a lot of TLC.

I know they call it the Gun Library...but it is not the NRA museum.

Shrouded is the wrong term. It has the hammer fully enclosed by the high curved frame and no access to cock/de-cock the action, making it DA only. I doubt that the grips are ivory as well. Ivory-looking. I didn't have time yesterday to ask a clerk to let me handle it. Yes, Cabelas is always too high priced, but occasionally I find something at a reasonable price. I too hate that they never let you "feel" the trigger.

As Texas Star mentioned, it's likely a 60-9 (or 60-10 if it's a 3", or 60-11 or 60-12 or 60-13). What's the caliber? Some of these were .357s and some were .38s. Of course it could have the IL, too, and be later than any of these.

Too much information missing to make an assessment or help much with pricing.

It's a .38 special. I have to go to Walmart this afternoon for supplies. The Cabelas is just up the hill from it, and I'll stop in for a closer look. My memory is telling me the finish is much shinier than Narragansett's posted pic. I'm thinking it's chromed.

60-9

My 60-9 in what I considered very good condition. I paid very close to $500 after shipping and $15 to my FFL. Based on the auction prices I've seen I was happy with that number. I've seen several sell for well north of $600. Take into account for that I am a snub nose fanatic, great for EDC in .357.

Navy,

I have one just like yours. It is a really nice revolver and I will never sell it.

Or maybe Bubba hand polished out the stainless trying to give it that nickel or chrome look. That would send me headed for the door

Cabelas won't take the trigger lock off for you to properly inspect any gun so I'd pass on that alone.

Imagine buying a car that they don't even open the door for you to sit in before buying.

They have nothing in their stores that I want anyway. Too much camo stuff. I am not planning on invading Poland soon.

Good fudge though

I looked at it. Grips were lousy, it is a 640 (they retagged and corrected it probably last night, price was down to $450), and when I opened the cylinder to look, oil was just dripping from the yoke, extractor, and star. Oil and rust...

Big nope!

That is when I might have said 250.00. I mean after all it can't be worse than my M12-2.
