I currently have a model 60 3" that I have been shooting the heck out of. I ran into a pretty good deal on a model 60 Pro series that looks like it hasn't been fired outside the factory (seller claims he put 5 rounds through it). Spent most of it's life in a dresser drawer "just in case". The owner needs cash and will take my pistol and $100 for his. Are there any differences between them other than the grips and the slabsided barrel. Does the slabsided barrel and tapered lug offer anything. The S&W site gives no real indication of any internal differences between the two. I'm probably going to do the deal anyway but would really like to know what I am buying into. Thanks.

The pro series also has a tritium front sight.
I would spend the extra hundred on ammunition and keep what I had.

Is your recommendation based on your knowlege regarding the Pro series or just personal opinion. The night sight means nothing to me. I personaly always felt they were kind of a gimmick. If it's too dark to see your front sight then you likely cannot see your target either.

I like the looks of the Pro series revolvers (except for the 640) and really like my 60 Pro but I don't think I'd see the need to trade a standard 60 3" plus cash for it. I would however buy it outright, then I'd have both! :D

Also the front night sight on the 60 Pro is pretty much worthless, it's almost unseeable even in complete darkness.

I have a standard, current production M60.

I've never handled a M60 Pro. It has a nicer wood grip, but I like the three finger rubber grip that came on my gun.

The Pro might have a better tuned trigger, but my particular M60 has a very nice trigger for a J frame. Plus you have yours broken in.

I'd try the trigger on the Pro -- at least dry fire it -- and see if it's any better than the one you already have. Also, does the Pro have an internal lock -- I believe some don't.

I probably wouldn't trade mine straight across for a Pro, let alone fork out $100 extra, unless the Pro's action seem significantly better or it had no lock.

Funny you should mention it. I had given some thought to making him an outright offer for the pistol but, I only paid $500 for mine so I figured this way I would still only be $600 into the Pro if we did the trade. The only time I ever heard anything that made some sense regarding night sights came from a woman who lived alone and kept it for protection. She said that whenever she awakened at night it gave her great comfort to look over and see the glowing green dot on her nightstand. Back on the subject though. Does the barrel and lug configuration provide any real improvement over the standard round barrel an lug or is it just "window dressing". I notice that S&W uses this design on all of it's Pro revolvers

The barrel is cosmetic. I have a 60 pro (wife's gun) and like the cosmetics. The grip is different, as is the front sight. It may have a smoother action, but you would just have to try and see. It does not have a chamfered cylinder. If you like the grip and front sight, it would coat more to add them to your gun than $100. I would pay $50 more for the pro for sure, maybe $100, probably not $150. The wife gravitated to it immediately. The grips are probably the biggest functional improvement over the standard 60.

I bought my wife a pro series model 60. It was what she wanted but not worth the almost $800.00 I paid to me. However, I think it is an excellent $600.00 gun!
Don't get me wrong, they are excellent guns but just not worth all the extra jingaling to me. You are paying extra for appearance but not performance.

Thanks for the replies guys. it sounds like the Pro series is the same old gun with a new suit. Based solely on looks I would have chosen the Pro over my standard model for the same price. Not absolutely sure if I want to pay the extra dollars just for looks although it is practialy a new gun. Gonna have to think about this one.

I'm the complete opposite. I like the looks of the standard over the pro. Man, wish I had cash to grab one... One day

Ask him what he wants for it straight out without a trade.

Some VERY savvy folks on this thread! Sailor, if your present 60 is your sole J-frame, under no circumstances would I give up a small-frame gun with which I am already content. Buy the second one, maybe. But no swap. You know what you have, you don't know what you're getting.
