Model 61 Escort info

I just picked up a Model 61 Escort. It is in pretty good shape. I have a question, though. At the top rear of the left grip is a pin which protrudes from the grip. It also slides out (but does not fall out because of a retaining ring molded into it). What is the purpose of the pin and should it be loose like that? Should it be protruding? Thanks.
