I am new on the forum and appreciate being able to join the group.
I am a life long S&W owner, collector and shooter all the way back to the first home defense gun I bought shortly after I got married in 1979... a nickel Model 15-3 from the sporting goods dept at Montgomery Wards!! Many guns have came and went over the years, but I still have the Model 15 and it is still like new. (Still have the wife too, but no comment on the like new description, and she would say the same about me I'm sure!)
Anyway, I wanted to see if anybody could help advise me on an issue I am having...
I recently purchased a new Model 610-3 with 6 1/2 inch barrel. On my first trip to the range I discovered an issue with its operation.
I was shooting back and forth with both common .40S&W Federal Classic 155gr Hi-Shok JHP in a moon clip, and 10mm auto Sellier & Bellot 180gr JHP both in a moon clip and also without the moon clip. The 10mm ammo functioned and fired flawlessly every time I loaded it into the revolver. The moon clips I was using were the ones that came with the gun. They looked like TK Custom clips??
Not so with the 40S&W ammo. The 40S&W would work perfectly as long as I fired it in double action mode. But when attempting to fire it in single action mode, the hammer would pull back far enough to lock into the fully cocked position, BUT only for the first few rounds. Then after 2 or 3 or 4 rounds in single action, the 3rd or 4th shot would not allow me to pull the hammer back far enough for it to lock into the fully cocked position. It appeared that the cylinder had reached its alignment with the forcing cone and the cylinder lug was locked into position, but just ever so slightly before the hammer moved into its final locking position, it will lock up and not pull back any further. The hammer will easily then lower manually to the uncocked and resting position, but will just not fully cock. Once the error occurs, and with the same ammo and moon clip still in the gun, I can still easily fire the gun in double action mode and it seems to function perfectly. Then, I can load a new moon clip into the gun, with the same 40S&W ammo, and the exact same problem repeats with every attempt. If I then switch back to 10mm, the problem goes away.
Let me know there might be a simple adjustment I can make or if I just need to return it to Smith for repair.
Thanks!
