Model 617 22LR

Don't know if original but they look to be SB Combats and would be consistent with what came on the 617 no dash.
ETA:
Nice looking gun.

Thanks for the info, that ties in with what the dealer said.
I asked him to give me the model number and he said it was just marked 617 without any dash after the number.

Which is the best version - I was thinking the 617-4 as it has the stainless steel cylinder in 10 shot and the revolver was before the useless gun lock thing.

Regards and good shooting to you, Mark

That looks like a might fine 617. The gun shipped with the wood combat grips exactly like is on it, so I believe you can assume they are original. The 5" barrel is certainly unique, and is a good compromise between the 4 and 6.

That's what I thought about the barrel. I heard a lot of people liked the look of the 6'' barrel but not necessarily the balance. So maybe the 5'' might be a decent compromise. Like I said the first owner had the barrel cut down as it was orginally a 6'' version.

My 10 shot 617 with a 6" bbl is my favorite firearm that I own. To me it is a work of art and is very accurate. My buddy, who is an experience handgunner and a Smith and Wesson nut with several in his collection, says it is the most accurate handgun he has ever shot. I got mine first (after a long 7 month search) and after he shot it he put his name in for one at a gun shop and got his in just a couple of months. Lucky ***!
Here are a few pics of mine:

My first 617 was a new no-dash 8 3/8 in bbl full target. I loved the looks of it, but was just too heavy. I traded it in for a new 617 no-dash 6 in bbl full target and owned it for probably 10 years. Then like a fool I sold it to fund another purchase. Later I bought a like new 617-1 4 in bbl. The 4 incher really balances nicely and it is promised to my grandson, but my favorite of all was the 6 inch bbl full-target model.

I tried.. 3 of them. Sold 'em all.

Just can't get over how dirty they get and spit back.

Prefer a good 22 semi..

I HAVE A RUGER MK II, SEMI AUTO, AND 2 M617s, A 6 SHOT, AND A 10 SHOT. THE .22LR CARTRIDGE IS INHERENTLY DIRTY, NO MATTER WHAT YOU SHOOT IT IN. A CHANGE OF AMMO TO COPPER PLATED, OR COPPER WASHED LOADS HAS GONE A LONG WAY IN KEEPING MY GUNS CLEANER…...

THE LUBRICANT ON THE STANDARD LEAD BULLETS ATTRACTS POWDER RESIDUE, AND BUILDS UP SLUDGE IN THE ACTION OF THE SEMI AUTO. EVENTUALLY, THE SLIDE OF THE RUGER WON'T LOCK BACK AFTER THE LAST SHOT, AND THAT'S YOUR CLUE TO CLEAN THE GUN. IT TAKES A COUPLE OF BRICKS OR SO FOR MY RUGER TO CRY FOR HELP……

OF THE 617s, I FIND THAT THE 6 SHOT STAYS MUCH CLEANER, AROUND AND UNDER THE EXTRACTOR STAR, THAN THE 10 SHOT. MY 10 SHOT, 517-6 HAD TO BE RETURNED TO S&W TO CORRECT SPITTING, AND THE BUILD UP OF LEAD IN THE FLUTES OF THE CYLINDER. IT SEEMS FINE NOW. A TRIP TO S&W, ON WARRANTY, COUPLED WITH A CHANGE IN AMMO, MAY HAVE CHANGED AT LEAST 1 OF YOUR 3 INTO A NICE GUN THAT YOU WOULD HAVE ENJOYED SHOOTING…...

IMHO, the M 617 in either 6 shot or 10 shot is one of the finest performing 22 LR handguns I have ever shot, tuned or competed with. One of the neatest things about them is they make one of the most accurate 22 MRFs ever concocted. The conversion is dead easy to perform; just buy and have fitted another 22 LR cylinder exactly like the one your M 617 has. Then have that cylinder reamed out to 22 MRF (WMR). Easy to swap back and forth. The accuracy has to be seen to be believed. So far, I have done four of them now, 3 ea. 4" bbl. guns and 1 6" bbl. gun. All were supremely accurate with good 22 mag ammo. To say that "I really like" the M 17 and M 617 line of handguns is a big understatement. ........

I regret not buying a 10-shot 617 last month when I saw one (pre-lock). I had meant to buy a mint older Beretta 81BB but they wouldn't sell it to me as they'd just listed on GB (no bids yet) and I left in disgust.

The 617 is wheel gun .22 perfection no matter what barrel length IMHO.

Three of my favorites....

Jan 6 yrs ago I bought my first Smith. It was a toss up between the 4" 686 plus and the 4" 617. The 686 won out. Finally, early this year I pick up a 617 10 shot and absolutely love it. Two weeks ago I stumbled across this very nice 617 no dash and added it to the family.
