Model 617 22LR

If any of you are using your 617 in a Steel Challenge Match and want to have some fun, check out the Ansac Speedloader. It is through Shooters Connection. Made very well and does the job for getting the ammo in quick. Worth every penny if you want to help your times.

I picked up a 617 last week. I took it to the range the next day, and boy, what a shooter. I have it at Dawson Precision having them install one of their front sights on it. (I'm a 63-year old guy who needs a bit of help in picking up the front sight on the 6" barrel.) I can't wait to get it back. Lucky for me that I live about 15 minutes from Dawson Precision, so I can run over and get it when it's done. I even scored 500 rounds of ammo the other day, so I am ready to go shootin'.

Congratulations on your 617 purchase! What kind of front sight are you getting? I put a green HiViz, #SW617, on mine - and retro target cocobolo grips from Ahrends, too. The D-10 Speedloader and loading baseplate just add to the range fun.

I had a 6" and sold it and bought the 4". Both are fine guns but the 4" is better balanced for me.

I broke down and bought a 617-6 (with lock) several months ago. I can't describe how well satisfied I am. This is the only (lock) S&W I own. With Winchester 36 gr HV bulk ammo it shoots a one hole group. I just mounted a Burris Fastfire III with an Allchin mount. I have only shot it once with the Burris, but at 10 yards I fit 50 rounds into just over 1/2".

WOW!! All the talk about the 617. I bought a 4" while waiting for a 6". STILL WAITING now for 3 months. My gun pimp has already been paid $600.00 in advance, the additional $150.00 won't hurt so bad.

I looked at several .22 revolvers and the S&W 617 is absolutely the best. I really like the 4" and anxiously waiting for the 6" to come in. Just wish they made a 8" in the same price range.

My kid calls my 6", 617 the hero maker. He said when you shoot it you feel like a "hero", holes just appear right where you point it. I stumbled across it used at Gander a few years back, I would love a 4 incher also. I am glad as hell I had some cash on me at the time. I am not going to say how much I paid for it,,,,, it was a steal.

My general opinion is, if you find one, buy it :) Used ones don't show up very often and when they do, they're often priced near the Manufacturer's Suggested Price and more than new ones at gun shops.

The lock, in my opinion, is a non issue, especially on a target/plinker.

Here's my track on the four inch version. Note that the Average Used Price Trend is at about $760 as of July 2013. Better examples of the model would command higher prices, especially with case, papers, tools, etc. Note also how the price trend outperforms inflation.

The six inch version comes in a bit lower but very close.

It is interesting to see so many people that want to buy a 617 with a 4-inch barrel. And at the same time it makes me frustrated, because I have a NIB 617 4-inch that I want to sell. The problem I have is the big hassle you have to go through to find an FFL and the shipping cost.
The last time I sold a gun was about 6 years ago and at that time it cost me $75.00 just for the shipping.

GRUMP,
I think you're a bit confused. First you do NOT have to use an FFL to ship TO an FFL. Also, the buyer pays shipping costs...typically. Then you send UPS/FEDEX overnite air to the buyers FFL dealer.

Easy.
