Model 629 Internal Lock Question

I am in the market for a 629 4". The newer models incorporate the internal lock. At what point did S&W begin to incorporate this feature? Why was this added?

I am pretty certain there have been more 629's made without the lock. Your opinion that they are hard to come by simply means that you aren't looking in the right places. If you are buying a 629 to shoot, don't worry about the lock. If you found a pre-lock 629 and it shoots well, don't ignore it either. What dash number is the pre-lock 629? Do a search. Most folks have a dash preference (me included).
