I acquired a nice condition Model 629 on a trade last weekend. It is a 6-inch gun and it is pinned and recessed. I don't buy SS guns very often so... I didn't know they made the N frame SS guns with P&R. Serial is N850000 range. I will have to check. When did S&W start making the 629?? is a P&R 629 significant? just wondering

I kinda realized they must have started production around 1980...when did they start the 629-1? 1981?

The six inch guns began in 1979 and as noted above P&R went away with the -1 in 1982. Where I shop P&R 629s all get a premium but more for the 4 inch (and 8 3/8) as those weren't introduced until 1981 so far fewer P&Rs exist in those barrel lengths.

Nice gun, enjoy it.

629 no dash

S&W introduced the 6" 629 in the fall of 1979. The first production run of 350 guns was completed in March of 1980 and shipment of the 6" guns began. At approx serial number N778000 in 1981 they introduced the 4 " & 8 3/8" barrel lengths. The 629-1 was implemented on about 1982 and around this time period they started the "ABCxxxx" serial numbering system.
The 629 no dash, N serial number prefix, and P&R guns have become somewhat collectible. The 4" & 8 3/8" are the most difficult to find!

I happen to have a set of round butt combats for a 3 inch 629...but don't remember the serial. When I sold the gun the fellow wanted the plastic combats. I'll get the 629 out of the safe tomorrow and get the serial. I kinda wish it was a 4 inch gun. Did they get sold in presentation boxes like jcelect posted??

Many of the 4", 6", & 8 3/8" were shipped in case as pictured above. The cases above have had the liners recovered with cloth as the original covering did not withstand the test of time! This type of liner was shipped with guns from about 1979- 1983 and could be bought as an after market item until 1985. In 1985 S&W changed the look of the presentations cases inside and out! The only 3" N frame guns shipped in cases would have been a commentative type of gun.

I don't think there was a factory-made 3 inch 629 no dash.
I believe you are correct. The 3" first showed up in the 629-1's distributed by Lew Horton. This one carries aa "ALD" prefix. It was missing the factory Combats so I used an early set of Kim Ahrends laminated combats.

Still l@@king for a "no-dash" 4".

Here's my 6 inch 629-1 manufactured in 1982 (AFB78**). I couldn't resist when I saw it since I'm not a collector searching for P&R examples. It was a GB win in 2018. I thought this would be a good thread to show it. :D

The stocks are aftermarket from the 'Bay. It wore Pachmayer's when I bought it.

Since we are sharing photos, here is my 4 inch 629 no dash.

I love those grips! ! !
All the collectors here missed the difference between MY 4" and this one! The picture of my 4" was taken a long time ago and that gun is a "transition" gun it has a recessed cylinder but no pinned barrel! The gun pictured has been replaced!

I finally remembered to check the serial of the 629 I got last weekend. N85562X. It is both pinned and recessed. It also has a very good single action trigger...DA is good... not as good as my other N frames which are all blue... well the 4 inch 29 is Nickle and had a trigger job back in 1981. I have considered replacing the trigger and hammer on it as I have 2 new TT and TH in my parts batch. The hammer on that 29-2 was bobbed after the trigger job by someone.

Picked up my ND last year. Nice shooter and the no dash, pinned and recessed, SS, only made for couple years all give it a special uniqueness.
