Model 63 .22lr

63 5 in. stainless

hey all, newbie to the forum here, thanks for letting me in,
i bought the newer 63 5 in. stainless last year and compared the lock up with my other older and newer smiths and the lone python,
and the 63 has a bunch of side to side in lock up, all my others are welded to the frame,
is this a huge problem? it shoots well, but i have no other smith 22lr to compare it to. i did check out a new 317 at a local gun shop here, and it was welded to the frame.
SO, bottom line question, is side to side slop a big issue?
should i send it back to S&W?
(ps, this is the second 63 they sent me, the first one i bought had a severely overclocked barrel and some accuracy issues)
thanks, Paul

Another shameless picture of my massive S&W .22LR collection:

The 63 now sports a HiViz front sight, too. It may be a better bullseye shooter with a plain black blade, but my 'mature' eyes enjoy the searchlight! One of the several aspects of the new 63 that Jeff liked better is the 8 vs 6 round cylinder. With my DS-10 8-round speedloader and loading plate, and the larger grip, it's fun!

side to side slop?

any info on side to side slop on the 5 in. stainless 63's, these 2 old vets are welded to the frame.

I bought this one in 1995 from one of our guys needing a bit of extra Christmas money. He was asking $150 just the way it looks here wearing the Herretts. I gave him what he wanted.
The 2nd picture is it in a holster made by one of our Sgts. It goes with me whenever I'm hunting.

$150... mmm, I'll offer to double your money ($300).

My 63 & 617 are very tight - with the trigger pulled & held back (snap caps in place), there is NO discernible movement of the cylinder. They both have barely detectable cylinder rotational movement with the trigger released. I would rate them as 'perfect'. If the other 5" 63 poster has issues, I'd call S&W for a return label.

thanks for the advise stainz,
called smith and they said rotation play is normal, they did however offered me another return label if i wanted, (this would be the 3rd time returning to smith, they couldn't fix the origional 63,) so this is another brand new gun from factory i would be sending back again.

Around Christmas time is the best time to be looking for guns. Always someone needing to raise a bit of cash and willing to part with something. Just come calling with cash in hand.

Funny...I was just considering trading my Model 18 for a model 63.....

I've owned both (still do) and I probably wouldn't do that.

Unless you had a good reason or need for a smaller framed .22.

The K-frame 18 is sturdier, has a better trigger, more accurate too...in my experience.

Last night I gave it a Saturday night bath. I'm trying out

some Eezox to see how I like it. It cleaned up real good. Radagast

on the THR forum dated it from 1993. It has some Uncle Mike, J-frame grips

which should be perfect for the wife, but I might look at something just

a little larger for me. The 63-3 now joins the 13-3 and the 19-6.

I'm on a roll.

Have a 63 no dash myself. Bought a set of smooth target grips off fleabay for it. Now it's my favorite small game companion pistol.
