I have a Model 63 Kit Gun (no dash variation) that shipped in September of 1980. The serial # is in the M142,000 range. I bought it used a couple of years ago and just got around to firing it.
I noticed that the trigger face appears to have been ground and polished smooth. The SCSW says that Model 63's come with smooth Combat Triggers. Does anyone have a Model 63 of similar manufacturing period that can comment on whether it has the standard serrated service trigger or is it a smooth one ?

You answered your own question - the trigger was ground down and polished smooth. Not that uncommon - I have a J trigger like that. Factory 63 triggers are serrated.

I suppose you meant to say the Model 63 no dash factory triggers are serrated. My Model 63-3 came from the factory with a smooth trigger. :)

Ha. Did you not like the darn difficult to see red ramp front sight?:D

Was always an issue in the 'wrong' lighting.

My two inch Model 63-3 has the smooth 'combat' trigger.
It is serial number BRC3495.

bdGreen, I did not, had Dave Clements change that God awful thing years back when he still work on S&Ws. Got the idea from Boge Quinn(he also had this modification done to his) off his website.

Thanks gentlemen. Considering the prices that the P&R Model 63's are bringing these days, I think I'll buy an original serrated trigger and restore the gun. It's a fun little popgun although not as easy to shoot as the 4" K Frame 22's.

My model 63 Serial Number X5269 has the smooth trigger. I'm pretty sure mine is original.

Earlier this year I purchased a model 63 from early 70s production. It had the standard serrated trigger. First time at the range, shot a couple hundred rounds and came home with a big blister from the grooved trigger. Found a smooth .312 combat trigger for J frame and installed it. Much better.

Walter Rego: If you plan on shooting that 63, you might try those smooth ones for awhile to see how they work before replacing the trigger with serrated standard width.

Mine came with Target grips, rather than Magnas that most ship with. A few weeks ago, I found some combat grips at a gun show. These cover the backstrap and I was not sure whether I would like them or not. Well, they really feel good, even with my short fingers! It shoots better with them too.

Enjoy that little gun!

My 1981 63 no dash has serrated trigger. Came with standard stocks. Found some NOS square butt J frame targets on E-Bay.

My blue M34-1, 1978 purchase came with a narrow serrated trigger. I requested a smooth trigger be installed at the Springfield service center shortly after along with my service M66... back when officers could bring their guns in... and a smooth trigger was not available for a J frame at that time. I had a target trigger fitted & subsequently polished the serations off myself.
