Model 637-2 Hammer

Do all current production J Frames that have a traditional hammer have the same hammer? I found a hammer that looks like the photo, but it is marked for a Model 60. Will it fit a 637-2? I am afraid I do not know much about the current production revolvers.

All the MIM, spurred hammers designed for the J-frame revolvers with the frame mounted firing pins would be the same dimensionally. The 637-2 was introduced in 2002, and would use the J-frame MIM hammer shown above.

Can you post a photo? If the "model 60" hammer is MIM, and is a current production hammer, it should be compatible. Remember though, these are not "drop in" parts, and may require minor fitting to function properly.

The 637-2 in question was manufactured several months ago. I am toying with the idea of purchasing another hammer for it to bob and remove the single action cocking notch. I do not want to modify the original hammer. That way, if I do not like the DAO conversion I can always change it back. The problem is that I have seen several configurations that are purported to be J Frame MIM hammers. One like the photo above provided by armorer951 (thank you), and one with different relief cuts on the side of the hammer.

These are photos of the 2 different hammers in question. Both reported to be from a Model 60. Both appear to be MIM. Notice the difference in the relief cuts on the side of the hammers. Witch one of these will fit a 637-2 manufactured several months ago?

To judge compatibility I would simply compare them to the hammer that is currently in your 637-2. The parts are dimensionally the same, but the hammer in the left photo appears to be for the models with the internal lock mechanism.

Looking at the original hammer from my 637-1, it is exactly like the one on the right.

A 637-2 would use the hammer on the left. The curved track cut into it is for the lock.

I also have a hammer like the one on the left, but the curved track does not have the square notch at the end. That hammer works fine in my 637-1.

I'd say you should be using the one on the left.
