I picked up a model 64-4 today. Since my birthday fell on Thanksgiving, I considered it a belated birthday gift from me to me! It is a 2" barreled version, serial number BPU3xxx. It is absolutely as new complete with the original box, papers and brown vapor paper. It is factory test fired only with every other chamber lightly black. According to the Julian date on the box end label, it was shipped in 1993. I have a 64-8 in 4" with the IL, but I had been looking for a pre-lock, pre-MIM example of the model 64 to add to my collection for some time. I saw this one last weekend when it came into the LGS. It was priced at $475, and I walked away, thinking it was too high. I was surprised when I checked gunbroker and found only 3 of these listed in 2". A real beater for $250 with goodyears, scratched up and hammer spur cut off, and two clean ones, one with box and one without that were listed between $550-$650! For some reason, there don't seem to be many of these out there. This gun haunted me all week. I couldn't stop thinking about it, that I had made a mistake, so I decided to check back this weekend and got lucky because it was still there! To make matters even better, they marked it down to $425, so I gave up and bought it. Some things are just meant to be! I feel very fortunate because several times I've hesitated on a decision only to go back and find the gun in question gone. I took it right to the range and with standard pressure 158 gr LSWC hollowpoint cut a 2" group at 25 yards! This gun is way more accurate than a snubbie should be! After seeing those prices on gunbroker, I feel pretty good, but I welcome any opinions from the experts on how I did. I'd also love any opinions on why there don't seem to be many of these around. Here are the mandatory pictures:

I'm envious. Some years ago we had an influx here of police trade-in 64 snubs, with the usual carried-a-lot-and-shot-a-little condition. I should have snapped up one then but didn't. Now I can't afford to buy guns anymore, but I've long thought that a short-barreled 64 would be a splendid carry gun.

Looks as if you got a jewel.

Gorgeous. The idea that short barrel guns are not as accurate is not the whole story. Many of them are intrinsically very accurate. The short sight radius and lighter weight (especially lighter on the muzzle end) make you have to be a little more precise with your trigger squeeze, breath control, and sight alignment. If they were fired out of a machine rest, they may be very accurate. Less chance for the short barrel to have a flaw. I have made believers out of several people shooting snub nosed 357s at 100 yards and making the plates ring. With light wind, good light, good vision, good ammo and a good trigger, they will play a tune on 100 yard steel rectangles. They will definitely shoot minute of car door, i feel very adequately armed wit my snub nose 8 shot 357 PC. Nothing baseball size 100 yards or closer is safe from my 3 inch 60-10. K frame is the perfect size for 38 Special. 6 shots. Full size grip. Heavy and steady. And the ultimate fast draw. Gun in your hand. Hand in your jacket pocket. No sudden movement. No telegraphing your actions, just a huge explosive surprise for any hijacker.

Happy birthday! That's a nice present! I've got a 2" 64-2 and while I haven't tried it at long distances, at self defense distances I'm very accurate with it. It's become my most carried revolver, more or less always on me. The grips fill my hand well and it points naturally for me. I hope you like yours as much as I like mine!

Congrats....SCS&W 4th Ed....... Model 64s at $600 ANIB

Also for what it's worth ..... Model 10 ......20% premium for 2" barrel and $50-100 premium for round butts......... can't say that translates to 64s but ......you done good!!!!!!

There is one in my lgs right now excellent condition no box for $650. I would say you did well at $475.

Thank you Gentleman for all of the great posts and information! I feel much better about the price after reading all of your posts.

texmex,
You are absolutely right about snubbies being more accurate than people think. I have one of the snub nose 8 shot PC 357s also and I've never been disappointed with its accuracy out to 25 yards.

BAM-BAM,

Thank you for the information! I didn't know that they published a 4th edition of the SCSW. I have the 2nd and 3rd editions. I have to order a 4th edition.

pharmer,
I know exactly what you are talking about. They were mostly 64-4 that were factory spurless. The one I was talking about was very crude in comparison to yours.

SLT223,

Believe it or not it wasn't $475. They marked it down to $425 when I stopped back a week later. I feel very lucky I had a second chance.

The MPI and CID guys in my Army MP unit (way back in the seventies) used Model 10 snubs. I've had a bunch of S&W revolvers in my day, but have never had a 2" K Frame. There will come a time when I purchase one and I hope it looks as nice as the one you just scored.

I can confirm how nice that 64 is, as I had that same gun in my hand on Saturday. The shop had the 64-4 and a 60-7 both LNIB. I spent some time deciding which to buy, as finances would only allow me to buy one. I finally settled on the 60-7 (BPW prefix, Julian date of 5 Oct 1993), but it was a tough choice. I didn't think it would take to long for that 64-4 to find a home. If no one else bought it I would have when I got paid again Thursday.

Kudos to Nframe for an excellent post and photo's. I'm also happy to know that 64-4 went to someone who appreciates it. If memory serves you got that 629 Mountain Revolver I was too slow on a few months back.

I envy you your success with the 2" 64. I have one, too, as well as a 3" 65, and while I can drive tacks with the 65, I've never been able to shoot the 64 nearly as well. I get better accuracy out of my 2" J frames than the 64. (All of my shooting is with 38 Special ammo - I don't do 357 magnum any more.)

It has always been a mystery to me, and periodically causes me to box up the 64 in preparation for selling it. But it is SUCH a nice package to shoot (and even to carry occasionally, in a Lobo Enhanced Pancake holster) that I always end up giving it another chance.

31FordA,

Thank you for the very kind words. I saw that model 60 and passed on it only because I already have one LNIB. It was definitely as nice as the 64. I'm glad you got it. It's very interesting that both guns were shipped in 1993 and both survived LNIB. I would bet they both belonged to the same person who probably bought them both at the same time. Your memory is correct on the 629 Mountain Revolver. I remember your post when I bought it. Good to hear from you!

wrangler5,

I've always believed that all guns are individuals with individual personalities. Even specimens of the same model will not always shoot the same. This is why no two guns will give the exact same velocity when chronographed with the same ammunition. I've had the opposite experience as you. I have a 3" model 65-3. It shoots OK, but nothing to write home about compared to the 64. Despite that, I would not sell it as it is my only model 65 at this point and would leave a hole in my stainless K frame collection if I did.

Nice find!

These stainless 2" M64's aren't seen all that often anymore, here's a couple I had about 15 years ago before my refocusing on 3" K frames. Very pleasant guns to shoot and carry.

These were marked "Detroit PD" on the backstrap.

SOG has em for $295 shipped through today. See my thread on mine.

I recently picked up one from a member here & love it. I've shot it in a few IDPA matches, usually bearing the other revolver shooters as well as some bottom feeders with it.

Great unappreciated gun IMHO

what speedloaders do you use in IDPA? I think I'd like to try out the Safariland Comp 2 model

Nice revolver at a good price. I have owned one since 1976. Paid $145 NIB in 1976 (see box in pic 1). Carried as an off duty revolver. Carried in a Bianchi X15 shoulder holster and also the handmade pancake holster in the picture which a fellow officer made. Very accurate even out to 25 yards. Still my favorite concealed carry weapon.

Sold the Bianchi X15 shoulder holster for $25 many years ago. Wish I still had it as a new one is way over $100!!

I've been using Comp 3s. I have 2 other K frames I shot in matches, a 10 &15. The 3 gives more purchase and I am able to use the heel of my hand to help seat the rounds
