I am new to revolvers and was just purchased my first S&W revolver - a Model 64-5 SS revolver with 4" heavy barrel.

I really enjoy shooting my revolvers in single action, but this one is DAO only and the hammer is bobbed.

How easy will be to convert this revolver to SA/DA and to find and install regular hammer?

Also I would love to replace the barrel with 2" barrel. Is barrel replacement easy on these and where can I find a good, used 2" barrel?

Thanks!

Is the hammer ONLY bobbed? If that's all, you can thumb cock it if you work at it. If not, the notch has been removed and you will have to replace the hammer. Sometimes hammers will drop in, mostly they won't and need minor but skilled fitting to the sear. You might need a new sear.

You might try S&W for the barrel. You might also try Numrich (aka egunparts). Brownells also carries some parts. Barrels also SOMETIMES fit right in, mostly they don't. They often need to have the forcing cone squared and shortened a tad. It can be done with a home made frame wrench and barrel blocks. I have done it. I don't recommend it. Don't use the old hammer handle thru the cylinder window method. That's a good way to tweak the frame. The last barrel I had fitted cost me $65 including minor truing of the forcing cone. It was well worth it.

When I try to thumb cock it, it won't work, so I guess I need a new hammer.

I looked at few hammers offered on GB, and can't see any difference, can somebody please point out the difference between the DAO and SA/DA hammers?

Also can somebody tell me what year my revolver was made?

Thanks.

In your first photo look at the little piece of the hammer that rides under the single action sear on the trigger. You will notice that the front of that little piece is smooth. Look in your second photo and you will see that it has a tiny groove in it. That is the single action notch on the hammer. Your gun was probably made in 1994 or thereabouts. Are you going to try to fit the hammer yourself or have a gunsmith do it?

I will probably try to fit the hammer myself, is it a hard thing to do?

I just removed the hammer and cut the SA notch with a dremel.

It WORKS!

Thanks for the help guys!
