I came across a friend’s model 64-3 that needed a severe cleaning from sitting for years. I noticed the model number looked like it had been a model 65 that was over stamped. Is that very common?

When I was a LEO the agency issued Model 64s…4” heavy barrel for uniformed officers and 2” for investigators. One of the 2” revolvers was stamped “MOD. 65” on the frame and “.38 Special” on the barrel.

I have seen this occasionally, especially between models in which a barrel and cylinder/yoke traded onto a frame makes it a different model, as is the case here.

I have a Model 13-1 that was originally stamped 10-6. It's a .357 magnum. I've been using S & W's since 1965 and this is the only one I have ever seen.

I have one like yours too!

You're the only other person I've seen post that they have one of these 13-1 revolvers that was built on a factory over-stamped 10-6 frame.

It happens with S&W revolvers. My guess is that this was to be a Model 65, but to fulfill a production order of Model 64's, it had its model number over-stamped and was built as a Model 64.

General question here: The K-Magnum frame is slightly longer in the cylinder window area. How would the factory accommodate bbl/cyl gap in this case? Wouldn't the M64 bbl shank (proper term?) be too short if using the M64 cyl? Or would magnum-length bbl/cyl be used and re-marked?

I do not think there was any difference in frame dimensions between the 38 Special and 357 Magnum K-frames, at least not until the redesign for the 2-piece barrel system. With the older K-frames, I'm pretty certain the difference was in a longer cylinder for the 357 Magnum and a shorter barrel shank.

The Model 19/66 and 53 Jet frames have the same frame window dimensions, their frames are longer in the front of the yoke top to bottom so the ejector rod shroud aligns with the frame otherwise it would overhang the frame.

If you compare a Model 10 , 14, 15 or 13 to a Model 19 from the muzzle you will see it.
The exception to that rule are the full underlug 14's, 17's 617's which are longer there as well since they have full underlug barrels.

What's very common is in the eyes of the beholder. You noticed it because you're one of those gun nuts that make life miserable for those whose only concern is getting the product out and the money in. That, of course, is viewed as an entirely unreasonable attitude by the latter group. There was a time, long gone these days, when such a boo-boo would've been scrapped without hesitation!

Such times are known as "the good old days" by totally unreasonable folks like you-----and me-----and I dare say pretty much anybody else who's reading this----a bunch of weirdos.
