I bought a well-used Model 64 awhile ago, old police trade-in.

I really can't stand the sights, or the lack-of, on this gun. I painted the frame to try to make it usable, but shooting at 25 yards with this gun just doesn't work for me. Up-close and personal it is just fine.

So, I want to drill and tap the frame to mount a rail for a red dot. Has anyone else on here done this? Some of my other S&W's are drilled and tapped for other sights, but those frames are flat on the top, this on is not.

Guess no one else has tried this. Well, it was easier than I thought it would be. Now I need to take it to the range and see what it's like.

Look closely at your front sight under good light (from the sides of the barrel). Is it cast as one piece with the barrel, or is it pinned? If it's pinned, you can replace it with a different front sight. I used a HIVIZ fiber optic, but this is primarily a "combat" type sight and not meant for target work. There are other front sights available - I think Millett makes some - with different colored inserts.

Regards,

Dave

Cast into the gun, not removable.

Here is what I did to it:

The red dot worked great tonight! I was finally hitting a 3" group at 25 yards. :)
