I own and love one of the pencil barrel 64's. I found a used cylinder and sent it off and got it converted to 9mm using moon clips. The dual caliber makes for a interesting, cheap shooting, medium weight carry piece. I have also done the same with a model 10 round butt 3 inch.

For too many years, the pencil-barrel 64 was a grail gun, until I finally scratched the itch finding and buying a NIB. Literally a time capsule, the lug holding the cylinder latch came loose as it used to on early stainless models. Felt right at home.:)

I bought one many years ago at an estate auction is almost new condition in the box. The original receipt from the owner who bought it new in1972 was still in the box. Love it. A much better looking and balanced revolver than the heavy barrel models. Had it been a heavy barreled model I wouldn't have bought it.

That is one model that I always wanted, but never really got serious about getting.

I've got a 64-0 tapered barrel that is a police turn in. Unfortunately I don't remember which department it came from and it is not marked. I have a 64-1 heavy pinned barrel that is marked EBRPSO on the grip. (East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office) Somebody did a nice action job on it. I talked to the armorer there and he told that the 64-1's were first carried by the road deputies and later transferred to the parish prison when the roadies were issued Glocks. Both revolvers are great shooters.

Those tapered models look great, but I thought the consensus was that the heavy barrel is the preferred design because of the extra weight up front and slightly milder recoil. Did the heavy barrel balance better or shoot better than the tapered? Or is it more of an individual preference?
