Model 648 .22 Magnum

I have one also and I love it. I bring a tooth brush and and a bore brush to the range because there is usually excessive Schmutch fouling after firing 30 plus rounds...lots of unburnt powder no matter what ammo I use. Enjoy it!

I was wondering why there was so much sand in my pile of spent brass and realized it was powder.

I picked mine up today from Yog at Great Northern Guns here in Anchorage. I think it is the first and only 8-shot 648-2 in Alaska. I've got a Wolff spring kit, Hogue grips and an Allchin red dot mount on the way. I've already got a Leupold DeltaPoint Pro to put on it. My old eyes make it hard to focus on the front sight. :)

Welcome to the S&W Forum! You picked a nice way to introduce yourself. ;) I think I would hold off on the spring kit until I established a performance baseline with the factory springs, but that's just the scientist in me talking. Hope you'll enjoy it.

You may have heard this story before.

I too am drawn to the .22 Magnum and looked for what seemed an eternity and finally gave up and decided to seek out a Magnum cylinder for the M-617-1. Not as easy as I first thought finding a Mag cylinder compatable with my M-617-1 because of the changes made to the ejector star and the dash one engineering change did not seem related as the other revolver I located had the new type ejector star also being a 617-1. The cylinder was fitted and I have a convertible using the .22 LR frame & barrel and am proud to say it shoots just fine. Not long ago I found a M-63 with a Magnum cylinder ( No .22 LR Cylinder) haven't shot it yet but am looking forward to that opportunity.

Beautiful revolver - If it were mine the next step would be to put a set of Culina fiddleback maple target grips on it. Oh, except for production time, no 14 day wait for those.

Very nice, I didn't know they made one in .22 Mag with the underlug like that. I sure do love my 617-6, it's a sweet gun. After so many years of larger calibers and the expense of ammo even when reloading, the .22 rimfire is wonderful. It's been a rekindled love to return to the .22 LR.

I'm one of those strange people who like the .22 mag.

I like it too. I hope to find one someday! I just sold an older 17-3 because I have the 617 and i'm trying to pare down my inventory. a 648 would go nice with it.

Have you tried any of the pistol specific 22 mag ammo? CCI and Hornady make it and I'm sure there are others.

Accuracy updates?

Only been to the range once with my 648. Fired 50 rounds of Hornady 30 gr. The 648 has a. Leupold 2 1/2 X 8 scope. At 25 yds my groups are under one inch. At 75 yds my groups are a hair under Three inches. I am sure I can do better but I didn't have a lot of time that day. As a side note, I had no problems with fouling or ejection of spend cartridges.
