Model 649 & 649-3 Photo Thread

A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to get another Mich. State Police
back-up, no dash, M649, which quickly turned into a package deal for two.

A week later I went back for one of the two M38's that I had the
chance at when getting the 649's. So much for self-control :o

The first 649 I picked up is shown on the lower right, now, instead of
the "lamo-camo" grips shown in the previous photo's it's wearing
some old S&W rosewoods, both stamped inside with serial no.
103, which means they could date back to 1950-51.

The Model 38 Airweight is kind of a mystery in that the serial no. has it being
shipped in August 1968, according to Mr.Jinks, but the barrel isn't pinned.
The serial # on the bbl is the same as found on the outside bottom of the
grip frame with no other obvious repair stamps found anywhere else on the frame.
The Trooper who carried it was issued the gun in 1984-85
& relied on it as his back-up during his 25 yr. career.

No matter, the M38 has now taken it's position next to the "first" M649
as one of my primary carry guns so both are back to doing what
they had done for so many years, gettin' around..... ;)

Bought this in 1995 for $150 as a replacement for the blue 49 I was carrying. It was new, never issued from a local PD who traded in all their revolvers for autos. They had 3 new in the box never issued, never fired 649s. Wish I had bought all 3.
I carried it everyday as my second or undercover gun for 11 yrs and then I retired. Today I carry this one more often than any other. It's a gem to shoot and carry.
What's not to like about the humpback? It's like the old spotted dog. So ugly that you can't help but like him.

Trying to get every one of them Ogy? ;)

Here's mine, a 649-2

Down and dirty cell phone pics.

Also bought a 36 ND in a recent spate of the 'need' to have small concealable .38's.

Replaced the springs with Wolf kits in both.

This 649 is a laser!

It's going to NEED a set of those Ajax faux ivories soon. :) Damn they look good!

hello all, new member here but have been lurking for some time..

I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of grips these are? I have fallen in love and would love to locate a set..

any info is greatly appreciated!

In post #14 of this thread I mentioned that I had picked up an old (Dec.1985)
Michigan State Poilce M649 that had been used as a MSP back-up gun.

This was one of those guns that had seen a lot of use and was in need of some TLC.

A Power Custom Shim took care of the end shake problem & a good cleaning
fixed the slow timing issue on two of the chambers. A couple of hours (by hand)
with the liquid version of Flitz brought it back as far the finish issues were concerned.

I was lucky in the fact that while looking for another set of J Frame Grips
for another gun I came across these in a box of J Frame Grips I forgot
I had, stashing them away before my J-Frame Days.

After installing a Wilson 8 lb. mainspring & 15 lb. rebound I ended up with
an average weight on the DA (double action) trigger pull of 9 lb's 6 oz's so now
it's time to do a little reliablity testing before adding it to the carry stable
so it can go back to doing what it had so obviously done for so many years.....

Edited later to add:
The lighter mainspring mentioned above gave me 2 light primer strikes out of
150 rounds, 1 with Blazer (CCI primers) & the other with Remington ammo.
Because of this I swapped out the lighter Wilson mainspring for a stock 8.5 lb.,
"factory fresh" spring. After the swap to the heavier mainspring I ended up with an
average double action trigger pull weight of 10 lb's 2.5 oz's, still using the Wilson rebound sp.

649 Question

I've been an competitive bullseye for longer than I want to admit and recently obtained my concealed carry permit. For whatever reason, I find the "humpback" 649 nice looking and plan to purchase one if and when I can find one. My question is, if carried in a pocket can the 649 be fired from inside the pocket or would the hammer nub hang up? I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks, Dr.J

Another 649 Q?

Is there an easy way to tell whether the hammer/trigger is forged or MIM on a no-lock 649-3?

The hammer is barely above the frame. If you can get your hand in your pocket and pull the trigger then the hammer nub isn't going to be a problem.
However, if you wear pants like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever and you can read the serial number thru your pants then the hammer might be a problem. If you do wear your pants that tight I wouldn't admit it.

I've had a 649-3 since 1998 and have pocket carried many times. However, I feel that firing it from a trouser pocket would be rather difficult. Not because the hammer will hang up, but because it pretty much fills up my pocket and there's not a lot of maneuver room. On the other hand IMO it is a perfect jacket pocket gun. Much more room to maneuver and point. It works especially well in the inside pocket of my Levis brand denim jacket.
