Model 649

A friend is looking for a Mod. 38, but no finding anything. I have located a Model 649. There will be extra weight but I think the stainless and extra weight might be a good feature for a carry gun. If there are any 649 owners let me know what you think. The gun is a police trade-in and they are asking $400. Thanks for the help with this.

They are a good carry gun, if you don't mind the weight of steel. And from what I've seen, that's a good price.

Which model is it? I've got the 649-3, .357mag myself. The .357's go for a little bit more...

I have one and like it, but they are hard to shoot accurately....it is a snubby issue. I do like the fact that you can cock these and shoot single action. My note show value at about 350 on my spreadsheet where I check Gunbroker sales.

The Pre-Key Body Guard Magnums are tougher to find and will bring a $200-$300 premium over the keyed guns and/or .38's.

I am looking for a 649 and I would pay $400 if it looks ok. Did the store have extra ones? Sounds good.

I bought this one in 1995 for $150. It belonged to another LE agency. They had bought several of them for issue to the plain clothes guys. This one and 2 others had never been issued. It was still in the box wrapped up in the oil paper with all the accessories. I've since personalized it. I've carried it almost everyday since then either as my 2nd in an ankle rig or off duty. For 20 yrs prior to getting the 649 I carried a blued 49 in an ankle rig everyday. I had a nickle 38 for a while and you will notice the weight difference between the alloy and the steel. I wish now I hadn't sold the 38 but one of the guys thought he needed it more than I did and he waved a lot of cash.
After carrying the steel for a few days you get so you don't notice it's there. In fact, I would notice when it wasn't there. It just became part of getting dressed to strap on the ankle rig.

i have a 649 no dash and it is one of my favorite S&W revolvers. makes a good CCW in an uncle mikes #4 pocket holster.

if everything checks out ok on the 649 you are looking at...............$400 otd is a good price.

My 649-2 is a great pocket protector, and is the only "J" frame of its day (according to the literature with the gun-1993) +P rated. I toyed with the idea of changing to the same model in .357, but decided against it. I figured the hydra-shock 129 grain HP is enough bullet and still very controllable.

The 649 is an excellent belt carry gun. I find the extra weight makes it easy to shoot but does not make much difference for comfortable carry. I carry mine several times a week. It does take a bit of practice to shoot j-frames well, but it is a fun skill to master.

IMHO the M649 is one of the best revolvers that Smith & Wesson has made. These are my M649's.

I have a 649-2 and a 649. Have carried them from time to time although I am carrying m M38 today.

The 649-2 shoots a hair better than the 649 but both do well.
I like them a lot.

My nickel 49 wears Pachmayr Compacs
and is loaded with Buffalo Bore Standard Pressure 158's.
A GREAT little gun. One of my 4 J Frames.
A 640 (38), an Electroless Nickel 442 (both loaded the same way)
and a 340 PD loaded with Buffalo Bore 125 +P's.
With J Frames, you can't have just one.

I have a 649 no-dash and can shoot an actual "Police Qualification" with it. Those are nothing like the CCW qualifications, you have to shoot from the 15 & 25 yd. lines as well as the close stuff. You know the old saying: Alloy frame snubs for carrying but steel frame snubs for shooting. Still true today. I would take a 49/649 over any 38/638 model.

They both were BUG's.
