While strolling through the LGS yesterday and seeing nothing that tripped my trigger, I asked the owner if he had "anything for sale not on display" and he replied yes. He opened the safe and showed me a model 65-3 3" beauty. Asking price $700. I have never seen one before in the flesh, and decided to go home and do some research before pulling the trigger. Condition was in very good shape and he said he bought it in an estate sale. It did not look to be carried very much. From my initial research the 3" seems be more sought after and valuable than the 4". Does this sound like a fair price? Pros and cons of a model 65? Thanks, I really enjoy learning and reading more on this forum everyday.

Go back and buy it immediately. The price is not fair in today's market. It's a steal. For you. The only con is If you are a sadomasochist and really enjoy shooting hot 357 Magnums, the k-frame isn't good for that. Or if you are too proud to carry something without adjustable sights. I suppose my model 64 3-in would get 50 more feet per second shooting 38 FBI loads because the cylinder is cut for 38 and not 357, But I don't think the bad guy or paper will notice. It's pretty much the perfect k frame to carry.

Instead of Quote, Thanks, etc. As buttons on the forum, we should have a BUY IT RIGHT NOW button under posts. Would save a lot of time typing out all the same responses! LOL

The OP would see 20 BIN's under his post and hopefully be back at the shop in time to collect!

I have a Highway Patrolman and a 686 for the hot 357 Mags!

3" 65s are very popular and that's a great price these days.

I have a 13-2 because stainless fixed sights aren't my favorite on sunny days. Other than that there is no down side to a 65.

Be waiting outside his door with cash in hand the next time he opens. Camp out overnight if necessary !!! You will love it. Best S&W carry revolver there is in my opinion. I sent mine back to S&W for the "combat revolver package" which is a great deal at $270
And to answer OP questions about pros - in my opinion perfect size and weight for a carry revolver. 3 inch barrel gives you a full length ejection rod. Durable fixed sights.

As others have said, $700 is more than a fair price these days for a 3" Model 65.

I think the 3" Model 13 and Model 65, along with the 4" fixed sight blue Model 581 and stainless Model 681 are going to attain the kind of reverence among shooters and collectors that the .38/44 Heavy Duty guns command today in just a few more short years. Prices are already getting what seemed like ridiculous just 10 years ago.

There is just something about the 3" heavy barrel fixed sight K frames and the fixed sight L frames that is "right". People that own them now are in on the secret.

I agree with everyone who said what a great gun a model 65 is. That's not a bad price either. I have two 65's, a-2 and -5. I would love to carry one of them but, it would be hard to replace it if anything happened. I would buy if I were you.

$1000-$1250 all day long.
As stated earlier, GO BUY IT! haha.

I forgot to mention the stocks were not factory, I believe. Here is my 686, the stocks on the model 65 looked just like these. These are called target stocks, correct? All the other pics of model 65s stocks had the round butts. The model 65 I am looking at felt very thick and fat in my hand.

From your description $700 sounds like a very good price in today's market.
I like mine well enough to make it my avatar. It would be the last one to go if I had to liquidate.
