What can anyone tell me about a Model 657-3, 6.5" .41 Magnum, with Round But, unfluted cylinder and rubber grips.

I found one for sale, very lightly used for $549 with plastic box & paperwork. I was thinking of trading my German made, Walther PPKS in .22 Long Rifle with 3 magazines for this gun.

Thanks - J.Solo

I don't see many .41s for sale around here and have never seen one like you describe. I did see a M57 blue 6" at a pawn shop and it was marked $729. I would think that is a very good price for the one you are looking at.

Sounds like one of the limited run Stainless Classic Hunter models. .41's are nice guns, if it appeals to you then buy it.

That is a good price. I have one just like it, and paid just a little bit more......

If you are not interested could you send info where the shop is located. I am in Western NY

I collect both S&W and Walther. If your PPK/S is in any kind of decent shape and all three mags are factory, you would be better off selling it for cash and then buying the 657. If it is not import marked, so much the better. JMO, YMMV.

J.Solo,
The 41 Magnum is a favorite of mine.

The 657 Classic Hunter (product code 103820) was originally introduced in the early 1992, I think. It has a square butt along with all the features that you mention. I put Hogue Brazilian Rose Wood on mine.

A total of 2000 pieces of 103820 were produced. By the time the run was finished, 1996 I think, the configuration had changed to a round butt. I put Hogue Goncalo Alves grips on mine. This is the only product code I am aware of that represents two configurations.

The 7 1/2" version that OIF1 45man mentions is a personal favorite of mine. Once again, I have changed the grips to Hogue Goncalo Alves.

I'd trade that Walther for a 57 or 657 in a New York minute. Love my .41 mags. Great caliber, especially if you reload. My 57 has 37 deer to it's name over the last 31 years. I prefer the .41 mag much more than my .44's. Less recoil, same results if you are going to use it for hunting.

I would also make the trade. The 41 mag is my sentimental favorite big bore handgun. I have the 657-3 in a 6" barrel. I think that is a very good price for one. wyatte

Sounds like a good trade, I would do it without hesitation, but then I am a big fan of the 41.
The Winchester 175gr Silvertips shoot really well in Smith Revolvers. My buddy has taken 5 deer with his.

There is one just as you describe here locally for $600 and the owner can't get rid of it.

Sounds like a fair deal to me. I think the various model 41 maggies are some of the most under-appreciated revolvers out there. An exceptional caliber especially if you handload and a bonus if you cast your own bullets.
