Looking at a model 66-1 2.5" being sold as "new in box with tools and docs" with S&W presentation combat stocks. What is a fair price for this item in today's market?

It depends upon your geographic location. Around here, $1000 would be a real good price for 2 1/2 inch NIB with docs and tool. If you live somewhere that has "approved firearms" lists, then it would cost even more.

As others have stated, location is going to make a significant difference. I just purchased an as new in box 66-3 2.5 inch for $800.00, and that was a definite deal for my area. I have no doubt that the seller could easily have gotten $1,000.00 for the gun, and likely a little more if he had wanted to hold out for the right buyer.

At least in my area, I’d estimate an as new in box 66-1 to bring somewhere around $1,100.00-$1,200.00 to a patient seller, and a grand easily for a quick sale.

I don't believe the 2 1/2" RB 66-1 would be shipped with S&W combats. They were shipped with regular RB magnas. I purchased mine in 1978 and still have it.

I suppose combat stocks might have been a special order item, however the label on the box should reflect that. At that time the magnas would likely be numbered to the gun

CH4 beat me to it. ;).

What is the asking price? IIRC The 66-1 was the least produced 66. The 2.5" bbl commands a premium. 2-3 years ago I saw a "no dash" bring $1200 at household auction.(w/box tools in sealed bag, papers& original grips) my last bid was $1175. Value will also depend on location& how long you been "chasing" one

As already mentioned, the M66 didn't come with combat stocks, so it's not truly "new in the box". I gave $1250 for this one ANIB about 2-1/2 years ago. This is the factory configuration of a RB 2-1/2" M66-1:

Good question. I can tell you that in 1978 new 2 1/2" 66-1s were selling at a premium. They were very popular and hard to find, and the gun shops knew it.

I could see a ANIB example selling for $1400 around here. I just don't see them for sale, and I'm at all the gun shows in Atlanta. If one came in I would hear about it.

Here is mine after several thousand rounds through it, next to a 686+ TALO.

Last of the P&R 66s mid to late 70s; which to a collector is a plus. I like it too!

Anyone know when the Combat grips were introduced..... my first pair came on a 4" 617 full underlug in 1989/90?

The guy actually has 2 in this condition. Selling both with original stocks and S&W combats with box/docs/tools for $3400. A little steep IMO. Maybe he'd come off a little bit. Without the S&W combats asking $2900.

I know snubs are a lot more valuable to collectors but I wouldn't pay that much. I'll stick with my old 4" 66-1.

For me , a TRULLY LNIB 66-1 2.5 inch at 1k is GOOD DEAL ANY decent condition 66-1 2.5 inch starts at about 700-800.

:eek::eek::confused::eek:

Steep indeed!

I'm guessing that price is for both. At half of that for one he's still pushing the envelope. If you are looking for a shooter/carry piece you might check out a -5. For strictly collecting... how bad do you want it?

Two years ago I paid $1500 for a 66-0, 2.5" new in the box.
At the time I felt that was absolute top dollar and thought I had lost my mind. However I wanted it and felt the market would eventually catch up.
So, here we are 2 yrs. later and I have yet to see another 2.5" 66 of any dash, let alone a 66-0 for sale. As a result I'm beginning to think, at least in Cal, that it wasn't such a bad purchase after all.

Combat grips were pictured in the 1986 catalog, so sometime before that. You could order them as an option instead of standard SB stocks, for $26.60, or for $17.75 instead of target stocks (from the price list, obviously not from memory). They also came separately, mounted on a card. Someone had a post of a set still on the card, just recently. Not sure that answers your Q, but that's all I've got... ;)

The Lew Horton 629-1s came with combats in 85, the 3” 24-3 came before that, 1983.
