Model 66.1

Here is a picture of a Model 19, which is the blued version of your 66 and a stainless J frame that I was describing above for a size comparison.

The stainless gun looks bigger in comparison to the other gun due to the angle of the photo.

Here's a shot of the same stainless J-frame .357 (Model 640-1) in Iggy's photo compared to a Model 66-1 like the one you currently own.

I think a "hammerless" stainless J-frame like this 640 would make a great purse gun if you were looking for something a little more compact than the Model 66. Like others have stated, a .40 that's small enough to fit in your purse may be a little harder to learn on and shoot well. I'll also echo the others in saying you're much better off selling or trading your gun here vs a shop.

Good luck.

Thar ya go!! Much better picture for comparing.

I have a small track on the Model 66 Snubbie. No enough for a trend, but the Average is pretty good for now.

Smith & Wesson 66 2-inch barrel Revolver in .357 Magnum,.38 Special, Plus . Bluebook of Gun Values (33nd Edition) indicates between $264 in 95% condition and $533 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 12 recorded prices for this model gun from $423 to $755 over a period of 0 Yrs 9 Mos ending September 8, 2012. The average price as of that date was $567. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $614.

Love it!

Here's mine:

I paid $600.00 for my smith 66-2 with 4 inch barrel in 100% condition and was glad to get it, here in Tennessee not an easy find.

Unless you're gonna devote some serious time at the range (which i doubt since you've had the 66 for 25 years and rarely shot it), stay away from semi autos and the .40 round in particular. Very snappy round. Why go to a slightly smaller .38 when you already have a snub 66? Get a slightly bigger purse, or better yet, get a good holster. Purse carry is not a good idea. How many times has your purse been on the backseat? Somebody grabs your purse and they have your gun, too. Your gun has doubled in value in the time you've had it. 66's are no longer made, and especially the pinned and recessed ones. I would NOT sell that gun.

Thanks all for your replies. It is very helpful and I'm glad I started this discussion before going into the shop. I was offered $225, then $250 when I turned to walk out. I declined and could tell they were disappointed.
I need to check the laws about selling here in my state, IN. I will most likely post on this forum.

I love it when somebody walks away from getting screwed. That gunshop owner lowballed you bigtime. probably saw a woman and figured you'd be an easy mark. Sell it on this forum if you must. Figure $50 to transfer and ship. I would guarentee you can get $550-$600 shipped here on this forum for that gun.

I had a severe case of the stupids a few years ago, and took my 66-2 21/2 to the LGS. He was willing to give me $250 for it. I laughed at him and walked out. Even at gun shows, they are few and far between, and most are not in great condition.
