I have a 4" 1973 model 66 in 90-95% condition, no box or papers, the only thing wrong with the gun is a little wear on the grips and it had a replaced blued rear sight, not the stainless. When ever I take it to a gun shop they pull the value book out and say its worth about $200. When looking at online sales sights it seems like everyone wants $400-$600 for them. Whats up with that and what's mine really worth?

Consider it similar to the difference between trading in a car to a dealer and selling it to an individual. One is trying to make money off the deal (no criticism implied) and the other may not as concerned about this.
Your model 66 is a lot closer to $400 than $200 as you describe it.

The shop will give you $200 and mark it up accordingly to a retail price, somewhere +/- $450-500. You could easily get that on this forum in the classifieds within a day or two.

Take a look at what similar guns are going for on Gunbroker-that's the real market value. I sold a nice no dash here a while back for considerably more than that.
You go to a gun shop to sell a gun they will give you about 50% or less. So they said about $200. If you sold it to them they would price it at lease $450. They buy low and sell as high as they can. The best thing you could do is to sell it to a individual you get closer to what it's worth.

I went to a gun show today (Inverness, FL) and bought a 90% early 66 no dash with the stainless front and rear sights for $375 OTD. There were a bunch of overpriced smith's including a really nice 6" 66-1which I "could have" gotten for $600. The guy had $675 listed on it. No box, just the gun with the proper grips. I passed on it. Really lacking wheel guns today at this show. A bunch of overpriced 629's, a really nice 57-1 which I almost bit on, but decided not to, and a bunch of beater early M&P's and victories with price tags over $450...

I think my laugher of the day was this one guy who had a table full of very nice Pythons. Very nice guns, but also had a couple Smith's. One was a 19-3 2.5" which he had parkerized. I took a look at it, the guy said "those are getting hard to find". It had a price tag of $550. I asked him why he had such a high price on a refinished shooter grade gun. He got offended and I handed him back the gun and just shook my head as I walked away.
I did end up selling my refinished K22 outdoorsman I had been trying to get rid of for a while.

I find it very interesting that there is such disparity between the prices discussed on this site and what things are being sold for on the various auction and selling sites. I must admit I would like to buy from the guys quoting values here.

The truth is somewhere inbetween. Gunbroker is crazy, definetly not real world prices. On the other side, a lot of people here claim to have bought their entire collection for $200 plus a gift certificate to Sizzler, so go figure. I dont use Gunbroker a value. You have to remember, some people are ignorant and lazy and if they get their mind that they want something, they will pay whatever it takes. It's like ebay in that regard.
