I bought a .357 from my local pawn shop yesterday. Wanted something to take in the mountains during archery. However, I am thinking I ended up with somewhat of a collector. Did a little research and it seems to be a model 66 no dash with both the front and rear sight being stainless. It has been used and does not have a box with it. Does anyone know the value of this gun?

Shoot it and enjoy it.
Used and without a box, it just that- a good used shooter.

Kevin,

That is the first run of the model 66 if it has stainless sights both fore and aft.

The value would be hard to say without Pics, but good ones with original stocks, and in good shape start at $500, and I saw an unfired one with all the trimmings go for $1500 on Gunbroker.

The 66 is on a lot of collector's radar right now.

If you can post some pics that will be great.

But don;t hesitate in carrying it or even putting some rounds through it.

It is stainless, it will clean right up.

Thanks everyone. I will attempt to post a pic. I am guessing, based on some other research, that it would be around the 500 to 600 range.

Around here a used one goes for $400 +/-

I am not saying you are wrong Arik, but please, please tell me where you are shopping?

Not at Delia's Lock's or Tanners, Classic Pistol, Shooter World....haven't seen 'em.

Heck I'll pay the gas and drive and buy you lunch if I can go shopping with you!:rolleyes:

And maybe I am wrong. Don't think so though. Maybe $400 wuz a typo, huh?

Bought one in Feb from Surplus City for $375. Of course they don't come up every day, it's not current production. Back around New Years they had maybe 5 or 6 model 66 with 4 in barrels. $375 take your pick.

The last one I bought was in July from Tanners. Stainless sights, clean, shiny looks unfired with tools, box and presentation case for $499

2 weeks ago Tanners had a identical looking 66 to the one above, also with box and tools for $550. End of last week they had a beautiful model 57 with 4 in barrel for $799 bot no box. Target grips like those in my 2nd pic.

Dalias is too far for me to drive on a weekly basis and Locks is weird. They sometimes get good deals but his prices seem to be behind current market pricing. If he had a tacticool rifle for $3k during the panic it's still there at the same price however if he has something from 1990 it's also still priced that way. A while ago I bought a banned from import AK that easily goes for $1500 on a bad day. This thing was like new and came with extra mags...he had it sitting for $499

In fact didn't I send you a pm about Surplus City a few weeks ago?

Kevin, I'm no expert at shooting black bear or mountain lions, but I think the 66 loaded with the right round should serve you well as an archery back-up. Cor-Bon has a 180 flat nose HC that comes out smoking. I might stick with a .41 or .44 mag but then you're carrying a little more weight. Enjoy the hunt.

Welcome too the 66 owners club
You still have a fine gun there, the 66 is well built, shoots well, looks good is an all around fine gun.

i have 3 66's a no dash a -1 and a -2 and they are some of my finest guns.

enjoy your 66 shoot her and take good care of her.

I admire your finds Arik, but normal humans cannot find those deals on a regular basis. You do mention they don't come up every day, but I haven't seen deals like that in many, many years.

True; I just don't (wish I did) have time to scout around pawn & gun stores. Maybe if I did, I could come up with a few here and there.

Probably 7-8 years ago I picked up this 19 for $190:

Today, I'd easily pay $200 for that gun ...and give a steak dinner referral fee!

Just good natured ribbing, but seriously, I'd have to add about $200 to each of your purchases in my area. And that's only if I had a friend that would call me into the shop the minute they hit the showcase ...or they'd be gone.

Happy shopping!

Arik, I stand corrected! And glad I am about it. I will be heading up to Surplus City. The PM, more than likely you did, just can't recall.

Thanks.

Joe

Mark, these are normal prices I see in my area it's just that the guns themselves arnt often available. Kinda have to wait for someone to trade in.

Check them out or call them first. 2 weeks ago they had Ruger security 6 with 3 in barrel 357 @ $ 379. Don't know what they have today. Check out their GB sales under Phoenix Distributors. Just Google phoenix distributors gunbroker. Right now the only thing that will probably intrest you is the M64 38spl for $290. Phoenix is the parent company, they are a warehouse a few minutes away so what's online isn't always available in store.

I always try to send PMs to people in my area who I think will be interested

I bought a 66 no dash in great shape a few weeks ago for $550. a reel keeper! It came with Pachmayer rubber grips.

At first, I did not think these were original grips but now I suspect they are. Any thoughts on this would be helpful. The image of my gun is below. I believe the gun was made in 1972 based on the serial number.

Here is a couple pictures of the gun. I purchased it yesterday at a local pawn shop....paid $260. I don't know if they knew what they had or if I am missing something. I would think it would be worth more but I might be mistaken. Serial number is 4K56xxx I think that puts it about 1974.

If you can even find one here which I haven't in a very long time 600-700 for a decent shooter.

The Goodyears aren't original but when I'm shooting I do prefer them. A lot of the police put them on their revolvers way back when. The 1972 no dash here has the original targets and stainless sights. The 1976 no dash has a red insert on the front post, the rear sights aren't shiny like the older 66, it's far easier to shoot as the stainless sights are horrible unless the light is just right. The 76 has a magnificent trigger so it's the shooter of the two.

Notice the 72 Model 66 also has it's original trigger stop also.:)
