+I have a three inch 66 ( and 65's etc) . I really like the 66 three inch version. I see prices on them flactuate sometime 100%!!!! Now, whats a NORMAL price one would expect to pay for a nice example of one, original, 98% with the box ??? I paid for mine 850.00 shipped and mine was 66-2 early 80's guns LNIB.

I personally wouldn't pay more than $700 for that gun. Some obviously would. All depends how bad you want it.

3" 66s...
Not NIB, but in good shape. 66-5 3inch, picked up in November for $450.
For what it is worth, I also picked up a 66-4 3inch on Saturday for $430. In good shape, no box or original docs or anything. I'll post a pic once I take some.

JTB7, that's a very nice gun at a great price. I wish I had your luck. I think I paid more than that for my 3" M65. They're worth what someone is willing to pay. I think $600 would be my upper limit for LNIB. I have seen them go for more, that would just be my personal limit.

I bought my 3 inch 66-4 a little over a year ago. No box or docs but the revolver is perfect. Gladly paid $500 for it. It is the only 3 inch 66 that I have ever seen at a gunshow around my location.

I looked and looked for a long time and was lucky enough to find a NIB 66-2 for $599. I had sold my wonderful 2'5" 66-2 with box etc. for $550 while looking so I only had to come up with $50.00 more. I was glad to find one at that price. I had seen them selling for up to $900 which is a silly price as far as I am concerned.

I think you paid the present average to high end market price. One just sold on gunbroker quite quickly after pictures with posted for the $700 buy it now price ($725 shipped). Condition was difficult to tell, but it looked pretty good. I hate it when the seller doesn't give you a good picture of the forcing cone and inside top strap. There has been a NIB listed on gunbroker for quite sometime with a buy it now price for about $1,100. I've seen it bid past $900 but it never hit the reserve. I know someone else that offered $800 for one (not sure of the condition) and was turned down. I saw one at a gunshow in very good condition (but not LNIB) a few weeks ago for $700 including box and tools (I should have jumped on that one). Hope that helps you feel better about your purchase. All in all I think you did okay, just not a "super deal". Guess time will tell if the value goes up or down.
If you can find a nice 3" 66, pre lock of course, for less than $800, you should buy it.

I have a three inch 65 and three inch 66.
Of the two, the 65 gives me a lot more utility. I carry it almost daily and have shot it to the point that it aims where I look.
I have snagged some clothing and flesh on the adjustable rear sight of the 66. I will keep it for show and tell and bragging rights.

I was also wondering why the 3" Model 13 isn't as loved as the 66. The rear sight is nice, but for a carry piece it isn't particularly practical. I think the 66 looks better, but does that explain the love?

When you speak of the 3" 66 and their desirability are you also including the Comp Carry versions, or do you consider them to be in another category?

tocohillsguy I would consider the 3" ported PC 66 F-comp to be in a different category, as it is a Performance Center revolver and made in smaller numbers than the batches of standard 3" 66's. Regards 18DAI.
From what I see in my circles is that everyone I know who has bought a 3" 66 or a 3" 65 or a 3" CS-1 , did not buy them because they are rare or hard to find. They ( incl me) bought them to use as a gun. ( Carry off duty, shoot, carry while hiking etc.)
They are some hard to find , collectible revolvers and then there are also some hard to find , collectible revolvers that are also GREAT carry guns. This is how feel about pre lock K/L frame 3" revolvers.

I paid $450 for one sans box but like new two years back. It was marked ; "M-66-2 2 1/2" $499" . Between simply FINDING a 3" 66...then asking if the seller could do better...and the immediate drop to $450 Couldn't get my money out fast enough!

I was recently thinking of selling or trading mine -- but that was before I realized how nice and rare of a gun it is. I purchased this 66-4 back in college after I sold my previous firearm -- a S&W 4506. My wife and I have a few Sig's now and was looking at a new one but I'm holding on to my 66.

All I know is im looking for a 3" 66 and have several guns I would take or I would just buy out right but trying to hunt for one while deployed is a pain so keep me posted on any forsale you guys find just PM me
I bought an early 66-2 three inch . 99.9% in the original box several month ago. By the time I was done , I am into the gun about 950.00 . Too much ? Compare to what? I really wanted it. Its my main off duty gun right now. I also bought an ufired in the box three inch CS-1 about 5 years ago. For 600.00 out the door. I guess I paid too little for it.....?

You see, a tree inch , stainles K frame or L frame in 38/357 with adjustable sights and a good set or grips is a great all around gun. In my book it is the best.
There is just not much that I CAN'T do with it.
