Sorry to be so tardy in replying to your inquiry. About 10 years ago, I went on a buying spree for nice checkered Target stocks as I am a sucker for high wood figure and saw that they were starting to increase in value. They also haven't been made for quite a while as no S&W that I know of comes with a square butt these days. I bought dozens of sets, some as a group just to get the ones I wanted and sold off the rest. I still probably have 30 sets, most with nice figure and good bookending - where the grain flows from the edges of one side to the edges of the other side. My best source was eBay, just beware of copies - search for "genuine wood S&W" and you won't be - well,
shouldn't be - loaded up with rubber and metal stuff.
Having said that, there is a guy in Taiwan who makes very nice S&W copies, especially Combat stocks, for all frame sizes. I've bought several sets from him with zero problems and his prices are half to a third of what S&W Combats bring. His shipping is even prompt, considering it originates on the other side of the World. Right now, his handle on eBay eludes my failing memory but I'm sure someone else will chime in with it.
Thank you for the kind words about my revolver. It came back from being refinished looking unfired and it still does as I haven't shot it and have no plans to. I have over a dozen stainless K-, L- and N-frame S&Ws and a few blued ones, all pre-MIM and pre-lock. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with the newer guns; in fact, I own four S&W 1911s and all but one have MIM parts. I also have a two-year-old Model 41 and despite them still being a no-dash model, I'd wager there is some MIM in it too.
Here are some photos of some other sets of checkered Targets and one of a set of Taiwan Combats.
