Hi guys, I have not posted here in quite a while, my focus shifted to old military weapons. I am at a gunshow in Columbia, SC this weekend. A guy wants to trade me a model 73 and cash for a Japanese Officers Sword. I have never seen or even heard of a 73, he said it is a nickle, 4" pistol that is on the scarce side...... Is it worth looking at ?? What should I look for ?? He is meeting me at 9 AM tomorrow morning to make a deal..Opinions ?

He is meeting me in the morning, anything specific I should look for ? Guess I am just going to do it.......

It doesn't sound to be a model 73 by its description; perhaps he is seeing one of the stamped factory codes on the frame and thinks this is the model number, or it is not an S & W. If you can post a full description or a photo we can let you know what it is.

I may have mixed up the description with the other one he has, he is bringing 2 to trade, one is the 73. It will be interesting to see it.

Very interesting. The SCSW says this is the only model they made with an offset cylinder stop and it created assembly and testing problems, which is why they destroyed most of them.
Good luck and be sure to come back with pictures if you get it.

If you use Google images and search for "s&w mdel 73" you'll see one pictured. I recall reading that the revolver is essentially a modified J frame, fitted with a 6 shot cylinder. The grip frame is very rounded, more so than the usual look for a round butt revolver.
A while back one sold on GA, it was from the collection of a former S&W executive, the asking price was 9k. So if you come up with one, you'll have lots of us trying to top that one for a long time!

I kind of wonder if the guy got the numbers turned around. Maybe 37 instead of 73?

Last year I had my hopes up on a gun. A co-worker was trying to sell some of her father-in-law`s guns after he had passed away.
When she gave me a list of the guns her and her husband were selling I about jumped out of my skin. Most were pretty common guns, but about half way down the list was "S&W model 16-3".
It turned out to be a 15-3 instead of a 16-3. At 1st I was really disappointed. But it was a nice 1970 model 15-3 with smooth target grips and I ended up buying it. But it would have been nice if it really had been a K32.
