Model 86-16?

I tried a search here, the website kept giving me errors.

Just got back from my LGS. He's got a used S&W Revolver tagged as a Model 86-16 for sale. But I cannot find anything online or in the Standard Catalog about a Model 86. Unless I'm having one of those moments.

Now, it's possible he didn't tag it correctly. I did not have my glasses with me, so I could not read the model on the frame. It's chambered in .38, Pretty sure it was a six-shot, no internal lock. Appeared to be a K or L Frame, blued. Appeared to be aftermarket rubber grips which covered the entire grip area, so I cannot tell you if it was round or square frame.

Thoughts?

Edit to add, looked like a 3" barrel as well.

The 86-16 is their internal lot number. It is in fact a 36-6.

Now that I've got your attention and while I do my searching... What is the consensus on that model?

Standard Catalog says only approximately 615 of this model were made. It matches the description. 3" full lug barrel with adjustable sight.

Own one I bought brand new, Only problem is the matte finish is pretty tender- trail masterpiece is a perfect description. Light accurate and looks like my 586 that shrunk in the dryer. My only regret was not knowing the 60-4 was right around the corner. 60-4 resists holster wear better. Either model makes a perfect woods walking gun here. More accurate than it should be and the 3" underlug barrel w/ adj. sights is good fit for owb or concealed carry.

Yes, a 3" full underlug barrel model 36 with adjustable rear sight. Many came with rubber grips so those may be original. Depending on the asking price you may want it.

Couldn't agree more.....
While I never ran across the M36-6, I did have it's twin in stainless, the M60-4, a great little gun.
Both would be worthy carry guns in the field (depending on what/where the field is that you are in ) For carry in Alaska, one should think about a bit more power than the 38 Special....

Back home for the second time tonight, I bought it. Slightly bummed it didn't come with box or anything else. But this will be a shooter, not a collector's item relegated to a safe. With any luck I'll be able to bring it home before Thanksgiving and get it to the range over the weekend.

They're Hogue Monogrip. One piece with an opening for a screw on the butt.

Just to fill in a little more on this gun's future. I plan to use it to get my wife more comfortable shooting something bigger than a .22, since she does not like any of my 9mm. I'm sure it will also see duty with new shooters and others not fond of a 9mm. My nieces, sister-in-laws and friends' wives are other intended shooters for this gun. I really enjoy taking new shooters to the range; sometimes more than taking "experienced" shooters.

I found an old auction listing online that said the Hogue grips were factory for that model.

This is the one you are talking about. Great gun, and agree the matte finish is "tender" and will show any holster wear quickly. But is a perfect weight for carrying and great to shoot.
