I never see much regarding the Smith& Wesson 99. Any reason for the
lack of interest and activity on this pistol?

The SW99 series is a great gun. It is generally underestimated by the gun world. The Walther crowd sees it as an imitation P99 (which it is) not worthy of their time (which is just crazy talk), and the rest of the world sees it as a Glock wanna be. Their introduction to law enforcement also had some issues, that were addressed, but killed their reputation at product launch.

However, these are accurate, reliable and unique pistols. Instead of being a short double action trigger pull each time it can be fired in 3 different modes. 1)Long DA 2)Long SA or 3) short single action. It also doesn't require that you pull the trigger to field strip it. Another featue I find unique is the walther lever type mag release. It won't accidentally release the magazine like the button style can under certain circumstances. If you do a search for the SW99 you will find a few threads on it and about their history and design. Pay particular attention to the replies by Fastbolt. He is very informative on this model.

The biggest thing to watch for on these pistols it to protect the rear sight. It can't take as much abuse as a novak rear sight or the adjustible rear sight can.

I have both the S&W99 and Walther P99QA in 9mm. I enjoy shooting both of them and particularly favor their unique magazine release. Surprisingly accurate for a short barrreled pistol and mine have been totally reliable with a wide variety of reloads.

I have had the Walther AS and now have the S&W AS. Both equally good. The Smith is always cheaper which is ok with me. The Smith hicaps hold 16 rounds too. Excellent world class machine.

Back in 2002 (IIRC) my agency at the time was seriously thinking of transitioning from 4566's to SW99's. During a T&E session with some quesionable ammo (amerc reloads I think) We blew up two of the guns in short order. That being said, I really liked the one I had in 9mm and wish I hadn't traded it off for something else.

Thanks for the replies! I have a 99 in .40 cal and like it a lot. I tried
an M&P auto and did not like the trigger pull at all I am in Massachusetts, and their criteria requires a trigger pull that defies
mortal man.
