I was looking for period correct stocks for my 32-20 at the gun show today. I found 3 sets of what I think are the correct stocks(no S&W medallion), I tried all three set and none of them fit correctly, the pin on the butt would not line allowing the grips to fit(they were just a hair off from fitting.

Question

Is that normal?

Do people fill the hole and re-drill for proper placement?

Were these not correct for the gun?

The dealer mentioned they were all custom fitted, but I dont think the position of the pin on the butt would change.

Any help or reflection would be great. The show is open tomorrow so I can go back and get them.

Also two sets were concave and one set convex on the top of the stock. I hope this makes sense.

Depending on when your gun was manufactured, the correct stocks could be either checkered walnut or hard rubber concave no medallion, convex checkered walnut or hard rubber no medallion or checkered walnut with gold dished medallion. Having said that, the .32-20 Model of 1905 is a K frame revolver, and pretty much any K frame stock should fit reasonably well. I do have a few K frames that have correct and numbered stocks that do fit pretty tightly.

All S&W guns were hand fitted stocks to frame until well after WWII. This process took off both wood and steel to get that perfect fit. No two workmen would do the exact same fitting, so every set is sort of custom. It is normal that many of those stocks from other guns would fit reasonably well, so your luck is due to change. You can open up the hole slightly to try for a better fit or keep looking. What is the serial number and what is the butt configuration?

I assume yours has a square butt, as the round butt versions nearly always used black hard rubber grips, but wood round butt grips are sometimes seen. There were at least three, possibly four, different styles of wood grips used according to when the revolver was made. What is the serial number of yours?

Its a square butt Ser. # 120890

Convex top stocks with no medallion would be correct for your .32-20.
Yes indeed!
Serial number 120890 probably shipped in 1923 or 1924, possibly as late as 1925. Gil is correct, it would have shipped with the checkered walnut square butt stocks with the convex stock circle and no medallion.
